Dundee council housing meeting appeal
The organiser of a public meeting discussing council housing in Dundee has urged the city’s councillors to attend.
The meeting, which will be chaired independently, takes place at the Central Baptist Church on Ward Road at 7.30 pm tomorrow.

It has been organised by academic Dr Sarah Glynn after a row between SNP politicians in the city and the Labour-led administration over council house waiting lists.

Nearly 10,000 are on the list, prompting calls from the SNP for a radical overhaul of the city’s council housing system.

Dundee’s most senior councillor, independent member Ian Borthwick, has now backed this call.

However, both housing convener George Regan and administration leader Kevin Keenan have dismissed talk of a crisis.

They say only 2000 people are stuck in inadequate housing and that this does not constitute a crisis.

Despite the furore surrounding the issue, only SNP housing spokesman Jimmy Black has so far confirmed he will attend tomorrow’s meeting.

Dr Glynn said today, “We are very glad the SNP housing spokesman will be attending the public meeting and would urge other parties to send someone to hear what tenants and others have to say.

“This is not meant to be in opposition to the cross-party working group, but to enable the people most affected to feed into the discussion process.

“Most importantly, we are inviting everyone affected by the council’s housing policy to take part in the discussion and discuss how best to keep up the pressure and make sure that we get action and not just words.”
