A Dundee man, who is well known in footballing circles, was recovering in hospital today after being seriously hurt in a three-storey lift shaft plunge at a luxury flats development where he had been working (writes Graham Huband).
Kenny Jones, who lives in Douglas, suffered back, head and facial injuries in the fall at the Clock Tower at Dundee docks yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where he was given a CT scan before emergency surgery.

The 41-year-old was said to be ‘stable’ today.

Two of Mr Jones’ workmates sustained minor injuries. They were allowed away from hospital after treatment.

Mr Jones, a centre-half, has played for Arbroath FC and a number of junior teams, including Tayport, Dundee Violet and St Joseph’s.

He joined Midlands amateur side St James AFC three years ago and has been skipper throughout the current campaign.

St James’ manager Jimmy Sorrie said today he and his team-mates were praying for his speedy recovery.

Mr Sorrie said his captain would be missed in the run-in to the end of the season, especially as he was the side’s second top goalscorer.

He said, “Kenny came to us three years ago and has been captain for the last couple of years.

“He is a big gentle giant and all the players are thinking of him right now.

“Hopefully we will see him back sooner rather than later.”

The Tele visited Mr Jones’ home today but no one was available to comment.

His wife Irene is understood to have been at his bedside since the accident.

The Health and Safety Executive has begun a probe and the building site has been closed down to allow inspectors to carry out inquiries.

A spokesperson for the Unicorn Property Group, which is developing the historic A-listed building, said the firm was working with the authorities.

He said, “We can confirm there was an incident on site yesterday.

“Emergency procedures were enacted immediately and the relevant authorities informed. They are on site carrying out a thorough investigation.

“Unicorn Property Group has co-operated fully with the authorities in their investigations and the site is closed until further notice.”
