Was it missing Linda in the water?

A person was seen standing in the chilly water at Monifieth, minutes after grandmother Linda Hill disappeared from her home at a nearby caravan park, it emerged today (writes Steven Bell).
Police said they are carrying out inquiries into what is being described as a brief sighting by a member of the public on the shoreline early on Sunday.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caughey, the man appointed today to lead the hunt, said, “The public response to appeals that we have put out in the media has been very encouraging.

“Only yesterday, we received information that, at around 7am on Sunday, they saw a person standing in the water in an area of the beach in front of the caravan park.

“It’s therefore crucial we identify this person. If you were in the area and you think it may have been you, or if you saw anyone in the water, please get in touch with us.”

It is now five days since 41-year-old grandmother Linda disappeared from her home at Riverview Caravan Park to go for an “out-of-character” walk following a night out with her husband.

Police and other agencies have since been involved in a massive search, including helicopter sweeps, underwater dive teams and interviews with her family, friends and colleagues.

After days of scouring the land and water around the Angus town, there was no specific search activity taking place today.

Officers will, however, be in the Monifieth area this weekend carrying out a poster and leaflet drop in a bid to uncover more information about Linda’s disappearance.

They will also be at Riverview speaking to any residents and visitors, who may only use the busy park at weekends.

A HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) has been set up at divisional police headquarters in Forfar, where all the information gleaned from the investigation will be collated.

Linda is described as being 5ft 2, of medium build, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo of a dolphin on her right shoulder blade.

She is believed to have been wearing a white shirt, a blue two-tone Regatta jacket, dark blue jeans, and black knee-length boots.

Husband Kenny (44) has made repeated pleas for his “scared” wife to come home, the most recent at an emotionally-charged Press conference in Dundee yesterday.

The missing woman was an employee at beleaguered Dundee firm Texol, and is said by friends to have been “disgusted” by recent job cuts.

Officers have carried out inquiries at her workplace, and have also looked at documents there as part of what they say is “routine” inquiries.

Anyone who has seen Linda since 6.45am on Sunday, or who knows her current whereabouts, is asked to get in touch with Tayside Police on (01307) 302200.
