Vodka, cider, lager seized from children
Vodka, cider and lager have been seized from children in Dundee during the continuing Operation Dry Up crackdown on under-age drinking.
A combination of wintry weather, high visibility patrols and publicity about the initiative resulted in a relatively quiet weekend for youth-related complaints and incidents.

Many of the youngsters police spoke with during Friday and Saturday night said they were aware of Operation Dry Up, which has attracted funding from the Dundee Partnership for additional patrols.

Officers gave extra attention to the city’s parks and to areas where youngsters have previously been found drinking or trying to obtain alcohol.

On Friday a complaint was received about youths in the Turnberry Avenue area of Ardler. Police attended and seized a small quantity of alcohol and took the names of the children there.

The same evening, a litre bottle of MD 20/20, a bottle of wine, two litre bottles of cider and some lager were seized.

On Saturday, particular attention was given to areas where young people have previously tried to get adults to buy alcohol for them, including Campfield Square in Barnhill, Ballindean Road in Douglas and nearby Huntly Square in Craigie.

Officers said they were encouraged to find no sign of any youths hanging about during these patrols.

Other alcohol seized during the patrols on Friday and Saturday included four litres of vodka, six litres of cider and a number of cans of lager.

Anyone with information about under-age drinking, youths causing annoyance or anti-social behaviour should call Tayside Police on Dundee 223200.
