Loganair comes back to Dundee

Pictured at Dundee Airport today are Loganair chief executive Peter Tierney, Joe Fitzpatrick MSP and Loganair chairman Scott Grier.

Loganair is reintroducing flights to Birmingham and Belfast from Dundee Airport just months after FlyWhoosh’s collapse (writes Stefan Morkis).
The company, which will operate the flights under the Flybe banner, also wants to introduce more services from the airport in coming months.

From May 21, three return flights each weekday and one Sunday return will be introduced between Dundee and Birmingham.

There will also be one return flight each weekday and one Sunday return to Belfast.

Customers will be able to book flights from next Monday via www.flybe.com

Ticket prices will start at £35 and 34-seat Saab 340 aircraft will be used on all routes.

Loganair chairman Scott Grier said the company was returning to the city where it operated its first scheduled services.

The company has a long association with Dundee. Founder Willie Logan landed at the airport when putting in his tender to build the Tay Road Bridge.

After his bid was successful, the company launched its first regular service between Dundee and Edinburgh. Then, in the 1970s, it also operated a service between Dundee and Glasgow.

“It is a good feeling to be returning to Dundee,” Mr Grier said.

“Establishing a new base in Dundee is an exciting development for us and we look forward to building on today’s announcement.”

Mr Grier said Loganair had identified Dundee as a potential market before FlyWhoosh launched its ill-fated services last year.

“We did not wish them any ill but took note when they started to struggle,” he said.

“We recognised an opportunity and with our resources and commitment we know we can make a success where they did not.”

Dundee MSPs Joe FitzPatrick and Shona Robison welcomed Loganair’s return to Dundee.

Mr FitzPatrick said, “I am really excited. I think the airport is vital to the economy.”

Ms Robison said, “The news that Loganair is moving back to Dundee is not only a fantastic addition to our travel network but a real boost to the local economy.”
