| Four year-old Adam Robertson and his 14 month-old sister Aimee are both in need of constant care because of their illnesses.
Doctors found a tumour on Adam’s kidney last autumn and he underwent surgery to have the organ removed. He is now going through aggressive chemotherapy and is still fed through a tube.
His baby sister Aimee was diagnosed with a brain tumour last October. She has undergone extensive surgery three times since then at Edinburgh Sick Children’s Hospital and has to have regular checks at Ninewells Hospital to check fluid is not leaking in her brain.
With the lives of their two young children at stake, parents Lesley Hastie and Gordon Robertson have been left with no choice but to give up work so they can care for Adam and Aimee.
This has left the family short of cash, but local businessman Charlie Kean, of Kean Slaters, has stepped in to help.
He organised a charity auction at the Invercarse Hotel last month which raised £17,000 for Ward 29 at Ninewells Hospital.
However, after hearing about Adam and Aimee’s plight, he decided to give the family £6000 of that money to help them through the difficult months, with the rest going to Ward 29.
“The two parents don’t work because of the kids’ disabilities,” said Charlie.
“I really feel for them because they’ve basically got nothing. The two kids have two different cancers. It’s hard when you see one family with a child that has cancer but it’s worse with two.”
Charlie visited the family at their Dundee home today to hand over the £6000 cheque and mum Lesley said she was amazed at how generous people were.
“I’m still a bit shocked. We only found out about the money on Saturday.
“We’ve had some money from friends and ex-colleagues before. Adam’s nursery also had a collection for us.
“Everybody has been really, really generous — I’m just astounded.”
Lesley added, “The children are both well, but Adam is still receiving chemotherapy. Aimee is stable, but she was in hospital a few weeks ago to have fluid removed from her brain.” |
