Charities make most of extra day

The Post Office Bar’s Halina McAllister hands out flowers to customers.

Broughty Ferry’s Post Office Bar joined forces with Cancer Research UK today in a leap day fund-raising drive.
Volunteers and bar staff handed out flowers to passers-by and customers hoping the gift would not only put a spring in people’s step but highlight the fact some cancer sufferers don’t get to enjoy an extra day like today.

“It’s about making a difference with your day and the staff at the Post Office Bar really want to help Cancer Research UK promote that message,” said bar event organiser Louise Graham.

Meanwhile, Marie Curie Cancer Care fund-raisers took to the streets of Dundee for the annual national Great Daffodil Appeal. The charity aims to raise £5.5 million in a month-long effort.

“Every donation for a daffodil will help us provide millions of free nursing care hours, allowing people to die in the comfort of their own home surrounded by family and friends,” said local Marie Curie nurse Christine Allardyce.

“So please make a donation and wear your daffodil with dignity.”

More than 200,000 children from Teddy Bear Club Nurseries across the UK also used February 29 to show their support for cancer charities. Youngsters decorated mini flowerpots before planting a budding daffodil.
