29 February 2008
Wedding leap

February 29 may, traditionally, be a day for marriage proposals but one Dundee couple marked the date with a wedding.
Lorraine Jenkins and James Hynes tied the knot at the city’s Registrar’s Office.

Memorable dates have played a big role in the couple’s relationship — James proposed on New Year’s Day and they were originally planning a St Valentine’s Day wedding.

But Lorraine decided February 29 was the perfect starting point for a “leap” into their future together.

“I just thought everybody holds their wedding on St Valentine’s Day, but this date is much more unusual. It only comes around once every four years. It’s definitely a very special day.”

But any hopes James (53) may have had of only having to remember his anniversary once every four years have been dashed. Lorraine (40) said, “I’ve thought about that and decided the only thing for it is I’ll have to have an anniversary that lasts from February 28 to March 1 every year.”

James said today was the first day in four years he had taken any time off from running his business, the Garden Landscape Company, and even then he was only taking half a day.

The ceremony was also broadcast on the Internet, allowing friends across the world to tune in.

Meanwhile, Angus man Iain Fisk (49) and his Cornish bride Julie Hayes (43) were also tying the knot in Dundee today. The couple, who plan to settle in Forfar, were being wed on the Frigate Unicorn.

The Tele revealed yesterday a record number of Dundee women were planning to take advantage of the custom that says women can propose to men on a leap year.
