I have witnessed destruction and received abuse from children as young as 12 hanging around shops where I live under the influence of alcohol.
I have seen children asking teenagers and so-called responsible adults to buy them drink and cigarettes.
I have been asked regularly to get them alcohol and cigarettes. I have even been asked in the morning before school to buy them cigarettes.
Should local shops stop selling alcohol altogether? Those of us old enough to drink can buy alcohol at any of the larger supermarkets.
This won’t stop underage drinking but at least it might take it away from play parks, street corners and local shops.
Those adults who do buy cigarettes and alcohol for these kids should be ashamed of themselves.
Money is handed over behind the shops and then the drink is dropped off there to stay out of view from the cameras. — Resident.
Parking disruption
Vans parked in Ambleside Terrace
I read the feature in the Tele about the progress of the new schools being built in Dundee.
The report failed to mention the disruption being caused in and around Ambleside Terrace. I wonder if any of the other areas are facing the same problems.
We once lived in a very quiet cul-de-sac (Ambleside Terrace) which has now become a car parking area with no regard to others by contractors and workers.
They are causing chaos in what is already a narrow road by parking on corners, pavements and leaving little or no space at driveways.
I feel the problem will only get worse as the development progresses. Why is there a need for all these new builds?
Surely we do not need them. Rockwell High School was closed and Linlathen bulldozed.
With the latest news that we exclude more children from classes, the new schools will probably be standing empty unless filled with Eastern European children. — Unhappy Tax Payer.
Plea falling on deaf ears
The comments by Councillor Ian Borthwick about pensioners having to “eat or heat” is an ongoing concern which governments have been aware of and pleas are still falling on deaf ears.
Research shows that elderly people are dying at the rate of 10 every hour through cold-related illnesses every winter.
This is over 25,000 in the UK and 2500 every year in Scotland.
For Scottish Gas to boast of a rise in profits of 600%, while these appalling deaths are recorded should leave them and those in power ashamed.
We have the lowest pensions in Europe and it’s not hand-outs we want.
A proper pension will allow OAPs to live with dignity and respect. — Jack Stewart, National Pensioners’ Convention.
Recycling puzzle
I have heard that recycling plastic carrier bags in stores is a con as they end up in landfill sites anyway. My friend disagrees.
Also I say you cannot recycle carrier bags at Dundee City Council centres as they also go to landfill. — Trying to be Greener.
[A spokesman for Dundee City Council said, “The council currently does not collect plastic carrier bags for recycling as it supports the Plastic Bag Free (PBF) Dundee campaign.
“To increase awareness and encourage the use of reusable bags, Dundee City Council launched the campaign on Saturday, December 1, by handing out around 2500 reusable jute bags in the city centre.
“As part of this initiative we continue to support and encourage the use of reusable bags as a way of reducing a very visible part of our waste stream. Although carrier bags are not collected for recycling, plastic bottles can be recycled in kerbside green boxes, at selected neighbourhood recycling points and all recycling centres in Dundee.

Heavy snow
There has been little snow in Dundee this year.
February 11 was the 30th anniversary of a substantial fall of snow in Dundee.
In 1978 Dundee’s bus services were withdrawn.
This was the beginning of frequent heavy falls in the city in the late 70s and early 80s. — Weather Watcher, Dundee.
Resentment
Free buses, free prescriptions, free school meals, free care for the elderly and now we can drive over our bridges for free.
In England, none of this is free. This is why there is growing resentment there. — Concerned, Dundee.
Poor service
I get the Travel Dundee number 17 in Ancrum Road every day. It is supposed to arrived at 1.01 pm, but it’s never on time.
There’s no shelter for the folk waiting 20 minutes for another 17.
This service is very poor. More people should complain. — Disgruntled Passenger.
House request
I have had my name down for a three-bedroom house for the past 18 months.
I have a 10-year-old daughter and a 19-month-old son who are having to share a room.
Dundee City Council tells me they do not have any available, but there is one along the road from my house at 563 South Road, that has been empty for months. — Donna Craig, South Road, Dundee.
House party fun
There used to be house parties many years ago.
We paid 2d. (around 1p) to get in. You brought your own cup for tea.
There was no alcohol but a lot of smoking.
Tap dancing was popular and young lads whistled and played mouth organs and jew’s harps.
The sing-songs were great.
I remember South Of The Border, Oh Oh Antonio, and best of all Buddy Can You Spare A Dime? — Up The Close.
roblems
The letter from Alex Ramsay about the Security Industry Authorities does not surprise me.
I had a similar experience. In the end I demanded my money back and after some time I got it. — Ex-S.A.I.
