Businesses left counting cost
Two Perth businesses were left counting the cost of a serious fire which gutted their premises overnight (writes Richard Burdge).
An investigation was launched this morning into the cause, but the age and lay-out of the four-storey building in North Methven Street was being blamed for difficulties in extinguishing the blaze.

The fire was first reported at 7.30 last night when smoke was seen coming from McIntyre Flowers and no 37.

Several people were led to safety and brought down by ladder from the properties above.

The fire proved difficult to extinguish and as clouds of smoke continued to pour from the florist’s.

Gradually the fire spread to the adjacent business, Health and Beauty, and the flats above were engulfed.

At one stage five jets, 11 breathing apparatus and two aerial platforms, used as water towers, were in operation.

During the incident the firefighters called on the water authorities to increase the pressure to assist their efforts.

North Methven Street, from St Ninian’s Cathedral to Mill Street, remained closed overnight.

This morning the clearing up operation began. The operational support unit remained on scene and a jet was in intermittent use.

A digger was being used to clear the debris, which was being sifted as part of the investigation.

“No one was injured but the fire has proved difficult to extinguish,” said a police spokesman. “Arrangements have been made to provide temporary accommodation for any residents not allowed to return.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.”

As a result of the fire, electricity services to properties between Murray Street and Foundry Lane were hit and Scottish and Southern Energy were working to restore power.
