A Dundee mother, who watched in horror as her five-week-old daughter had to be revived in her local supermarket, has urged the mystery medics who helped save her daughter’s life to come forward (writes Debbie Kerr).
Baby Kodi McCleary almost lost her young life in January when she suffered a heart attack, brought on by a rare medical condition.

However, thanks to the heroic actions of three strangers, the infant survived the frightening ordeal and now her mother is desperate to say thank you.

Tammie Rowlands (23), of Finlow Terrace, was doing her weekly shopping in Tesco Kingsway, when she noticed Kodi was struggling to breathe.

In a matter of seconds the tot had gone blue and her parents frantically began calling out for help.

Luckily, three male medical students, whose identities are unknown, were also in the store and took quick control of the serious situation.

Tammie said she was terrified when she realised her little girl was in serious danger.

“Kodi was in the car seat in the trolley when she started to have a wee whinge and a cry, so I gave her a dummy to calm her down”, the young mum explained.

“It was only when she spat the dummy out again that her dad Kevin, noticed her lips were completely blue.

“The colour seemed to spread quickly and her chin started to go blue too. We knew something was wrong so my mother-in-law started shouting for someone to help.

“I can’t even put my feelings into words about how I felt at that point, I went into shock and was screaming and crying and shaking.”

Fortunately, the three mystery medical students immediately responded to the family’s desperate pleas for help and applied their skills to help save the seriously ill infant.

Tammie continued, “They took her straight off her dad, and lay her on the floor to help her.

“I heard one of them say she had no breathing sounds and they began massaging her chest and patting her feet to get her circulation moving. The store first aider was also there trying to help.

“We were so lucky. What are the chances that all these people would be there to help. I was devastated. I thought I had lost her.”

Alert shop assistants immediately called for an ambulance, which quickly arrived on scene to treat the ill tot.

Five-week-old Kodi was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where doctors later diagnosed her with a serious heart condition, which had led to a heart attack.

Kodi’s anxious parents were informed their daughter was born with anomalous left coronary artery from pulmonary artery or ALCAPA, a rare condition that only affects one in 300,000 people.

After a number of tests, the infant was transferred to The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, in Glasgow, where she underwent major heart surgery.

Following the successful eight-hour operation, Kodi was treated in hospital for almost a month, but was finally allowed to come home last Sunday.

The brave little girl must continue to take medication to keep her heart healthy, but her mother is just thankful her daughter made it through such a frightening ordeal.

Tammie said, “I am so proud of her. Looking at her you would never know about her heart.

“I just want the people who helped to get a wee bit of recognition.

“The staff in Tesco were brilliant as well. They were trying to console us when it happened and even brought us some flowers the day after.

“I want to thank everyone that helped us, but I especially want to thank the three men in the shop. They practically saved her life.

“It is really hard to know how to say thank you to someone who has saved your daughter’s life.”
