Toll-free Tay Road Bridge racetrack

Non-speeding motorists using the toll free bridge today.

Motorists began using the Tay Road Bridge as a racetrack within hours of the tolls being removed at midnight (writes Graham Huband).
Bridge Inspector Kevin Coats said drivers had been accelerating up the ramps on the Dundee side and speeding through the toll booths.

Mr Coats said work to remove the booths would continue for some time and said lives of workers were at risk. He said there was a 30mph limit at the booths but some had been travelling at double that speed.

Mr Coats added, “Because they are not stopping at the tolls they are having to brake suddenly for a new chicane further out the bridge. You see the brake lights going red.”

Mr Coats said he had brought the issue to the attention of bridge manager John Crerar and the situation is being monitored.

One Dundonian told the Tele, “I saw a couple of motorists go tearing up the southbound lane and within minutes they were racing back down the northbound lane.

“It has only been a matter of hours since the tolls were abolished so hopefully this kind of behaviour will just be a flash in the pan.”

Inspector Coats said traffic flow at the peak period this morning had been in line with normal levels.

He said, “It doesn’t seem to be any busier or lighter in traffic.

“Looking down you can see the regular customers coming through in certain buses and certain cars.

“Tonight, during rush hour when traffic has traditionally backed up on South Marketgait as drivers queued to pass through the tolls, will be the big proof of the pudding.”
