Crashed lorry just yards from disaster in Dundee

A train passes the crashed lorry on Stannergate Road.

A major rail accident was narrowly avoided in Dundee today after a lorry crashed through a boundary fence at Stannergate Road and ended up just yards from the track.
East coast rail services would have been seriously disrupted had the lorry not stopped in time.

The vehicle left the road around 10.20am, careering through a boundary fence and up the embankment.

It came to rest just yards from the Dundee-bound side of the track.

Luckily the driver was unscathed and the emergency services were quickly on the scene.

A caution was immediately imposed on the track with a temporary speed limit put in place.

The lorry was not thought a danger to services and full line speed was restored at 10.50am with equipment brought in to remove the vehicle.

A spokesman for Network Rail shrugged off today’s close call.

“A lorry went through a boundary fence at Stannergate Road,” he said. “It was not a major incident.

“It went through the fence, but it didn’t get anywhere near the track. But we did impose a caution on the line just before 10.30am.

“Full line speed was restored at 10.50am.”

A spokesman for Tayside Police said nobody was hurt as a result of the incident.

“The lorry had gone off the road and breached the boundary fence,” he said.

“Network Rail were out there and were happy the lorry wasn’t going anywhere.

“The lorry has now been uplifted.”

A spokesman for Forth Ports, who run the Dundee harbour area, said, “As part of the port emergency plan Tayside Police were immediately informed and the road closed.

“Tayside Police and the Vehicle & Operator Service Agency have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident.”
