United want Barry to stay
Another wonder goal is bound to equal more speculation about his future, but Dundee United moved swiftly today to stress their preferred option this January is to hang on to skipper Barry Robson (writes Tom Duthie).
Robson’s thunderous 30-yard winner in front of the television cameras in the Scottish Cup tie at Clyde last night will only have increased his stock.

And the list of would-be buyers is likely to grow — Celtic, Rangers, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, whose manager Owen Coyle is being tipped to launch his bid in the next few days, are already on it.

Tangerines boss Craig Levein is aware of all that, but was remaining relaxed today.

“When a player like Barry scores a goal like he did last night, people will sit up and take notice and there will be more speculation, that’s football,” said Craig.

“I hear it, too, but, what I will say is that, for all the talk so far, we have not had one offer for Barry Robson and I’ll be happy if things stay that way.”

It’s generally accepted that an offer stretching into seven figures would be enough to get the 29-year-old Scotland international. That, though, should not be taken as a desire on United’s part to cash in on their skipper.

“What is an acceptable offer is a matter for the boardroom and not me. No-one here, though, at any level, has given the impression we want one to come in and I want to keep working with my good players.”

Last night’s Broadwood victory was secured with no major injury problems, though striker Jordan Robertson did pick up a knock and might be a slight doubt for Saturday’s visit of Aberdeen.

Goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski is now not expected back from Warsaw, where he is receiving treatment for a knee ligament strain, in time for that one. With his long-term future to be sorted out, Szamotulski is targeting the game at Kilmarnock on Saturday week.

If fellow-countryman Lukasz Zaluska proves his fitness in the reserves next week, however, he may play in that one as the manager takes the chance to see him in first-team action before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

It was confirmed today that Stuart Duff has now left United — he could be back on Saturday, though, as an Aberdeen player.

Dee eye young striker
The talk this week has been of striker Derek Lyle’s impending departure, but Dundee boss Alex Rae was today focusing on players who could be moving in the other direction (writes Tom Duthie).
While the Dark Blues have still to receive confirmation from Hamilton Accies, the First Division leaders have announced Lyle has now agreed to switch to New Douglas Park in the summer.

As revealed by the Tele yesterday, that will not stop Alex using the 26-year-old for the remainder of this term — once he has served a three-game league ban — and the gaffer’s main priority right now is strengthening his strike force.

With that in mind, he has handed training facilities to a young English striker who impressed in a closed-door game at Hibs yesterday.

Also still in the thoughts after a 90 minutes that saw several trialists used is former Hearts midfielder Jean Louis Valois.

“There was a striker who showed up well and we will be keeping him up here for a few more days, then take things from there,” said Alex.

“Valois did play as well and he is one I am going to have a think about. I won’t, though, be taking things any further with Brent Sancho.

“Regarding Derek Lyle, no-one has told me he has signed anything and, as far as I’m concerned, he’s a member of my squad. I’m looking to strengthen my options, not weaken them.”

Alex was on a double mission last night when he took in Dundee United’s Scottish Cup trip to Clyde.

He wanted to see the Bully Wee ahead of his side’s league clash at Broadwood on Saturday and he also took the opportunity to check on central defender Craig McKeown, who is due to join up in the summer.

The 22-year-old’s powerful performance at the heart of the defence will see another attempt made to bring his switch forward to the current transfer window.

Dundee will head for Broadwood with Gary MacKenzie ready to return to central defence.

He has missed the last two games, but his absence from the Scottish Cup win at Huntly on Tuesday was purely precautionary.

Stuart suffering
St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes said central defender Stuart McCaffrey is “extremely doubtful” for Saturday’s game at Dunfermline. He received an ankle knock against Raith (writes James Masson).
Several other players have flu symptoms and are being monitored closely.

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed striker Daniel McBreen will undergo a cartilage operation in London tomorrow. He’s likely to be out for six weeks.
