Drink-drivers ‘shopped’ by public: police
Nine people have been arrested by Tayside Police for alleged drink or drug driving offences after being “shopped” by members of the public (writes Alan Wilson).
They were among the 12 people arrested for drink-driving offences during week two of the national festive safety campaign in Tayside.

Another driver was arrested for driving while unfit through drugs. Twelve of the 13 arrested were men.

Police have thanked the public for their support during the campaign. Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing said, “The fact that nine people were arrested proves the value of calling the police.

“The extreme incidents we dealt with graphically highlight the very real dangers that drink/drug drivers pose on the roads. But it is worth reminding everybody that even small quantities of alcohol or drugs can have an effect on motorists and may cause them to react more slowly to incidents on the road.”

Chief Inspector Bowman said police would continue to be on the lookout for drink/drug drivers over the festive season.

“Spending a night in the cells and subsequently losing your driving licence is not the Christmas present you want. If you do take the risk and drink and drive, both the police and the public will be looking for you,” he said.

Three of those arrested were under 25 years old. They were a 20-year-old disqualified driver arrested in rural Angus, an 18-year-old arrested in Arbroath and a 22-year-old man arrested in Montrose.

In the most shocking example of the week, a man in his 30s in Perthshire was alleged to be unfit to drive through drugs while driving with two young children in his car. He has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal at Perth.

Three drivers were arrested for drink-driving after being involved in collisions.

Among them was a 42-year-old man in Dundee who was allegedly five times over the limit.

A 68-year-old man in Dundee was said to be three times over the limit and, in Angus, a woman was arrested after allegedly failing to stop after a collision. She was said to be nearly three times over the limit.

Last year, 19 drivers were arrested for drink-driving over the festive season.
