From Beanoland, with love

Daniel displays a gift from ‘Beanoland’.

A former pupil returned to St John’s High School in Dundee this week to tell pupils about her charity work in Africa.
Catriona McLean (37), who works for Halifax Bank of Scotland, was seconded to an orphanage in Nairobi for six months this year.

The orphanage is home to 178 abandoned and orphaned children whose ages range from days old to 18 years.

When her former school heard about her charity work in Kenya they donated money from their Lenten fund to support Catriona’s efforts.

Headteacher George Haggarty said, “Catriona spoke with our sixth year and first year pupils about the work she carried out and her experiences and challenges out there.

“The pupils were very interested, especially as some of them are already considering doing voluntary work overseas themselves.”

Catriona was delighted to discover Dundee’s very own Beano and Dandy on the shelves of a supermarket in Nairobi.

“I bought copies for the children, and of course for myself. I sponsor a boy called Daniel, who is six years old, and he loved them,” she said.

“I had been explaining that they are published in my home town of Dundee and I had to laugh when I showed Daniel Scotland on the map and he exclaimed, ‘Oh Beanoland’.”

Catriona came home in July but returned to Nairobi in October, this time bearing gifts from the Tele.

“The children loved the gifts from ‘Beanoland’ — there was so much stuff that Daniel shared the gifts with his friends,” she said.

“Overall, it was a fantastic experience and it was wonderful to return to my old school this week and speak with the pupils about my time out in Nairobi.

“The pupils listened intently and they were able to learn a lot from me speaking to them one-to-one, and they were keen to ask questions.

She concluded by saying, “My employers at HBOS have been really supportive. I definitely hope to be going back out again soon.”
