| Members of Dundee City Council’s economic development committee are being asked to approve £120,000 to provide a digital recording system to replace existing video tape equipment.
The proposed upgrade is expected to save time in police investigations, according to officials.
Committee convener Joe Morrow said, “With technology moving on and VCRs being superseded by the use of digital recording, we looked at a number of options for replacement, as well as examining the experience of Fife Council, which recently faced the same issue.
“As the video equipment gets near to the end of its operating life, parts become scarce and manufacturers are phasing out production, so it is prudent to make sure the people of Dundee are given the best possible protection by the system.”
Dundee’s CCTV system is funded by the council, which manages and maintains equipment operated in partnership with Tayside Police. The city centre and a number of outlying areas are covered by a network of 81 cameras observed by Tayside Police at the control room in West Bell Street.
According to a report by director of economic development, Doug Grimmond, the new digital storage system will allow quicker review of recordings, which will mean savings in police time.
Images captured in digital form can also be viewed over a computer network and emailed, which will also increase police efficiency.
