DOUG FIRST PLAYER FORCED TO LEAVE

The Dundee and District Juvenile League is fondly remembered by Monifieth reader DOUG CRUMLEY.

“This is the LOCHRAE team (pictured at foot of column) which reached the Scottish Cup semi-final in season 1959-60 or 60-61.

“We were defeated 5-2 in the national competition by a team called League Hearts, from Glasgow, and the game was played at Celtic Park.

“Hearts, in fact, were beaten in the final.

“The team was — in old 2-3-5 formation — Pullar; Crumley, Laird; Finlayson, Thomson, Millar; Monaghan, Robertson, Dyer, Stark, Meech.

“The club was run by Jim ‘Pop’ Kearns, Gerry Traynor and Fred Croft. They put a lot of work into the club.

“In later years, we won several cups, including the Forfarshire Cup, Angus Challenge Cup, Samuel Cup and others.

“Personally, I hold the distinction of being the first Lochrae player to reach the cut-off age of 27.

“I had many good years in the juvenile association with the club and made many friends.

“This particular photo was taken at the drying greens of the cottages in Marybank Lane in Lochee.

“The cottages in the background were later demolished and the current Logie Recreation Club was built. We then moved to a new building in South Road.”

ALREADY THERE

Lochee’s JIM McLEAN wants to tweak the information TOM McGOVERN gave out in BwB on November 9.

“I know Tom well and he is a very sincere gentleman, but he mentioned that, when Dunkeld Amateurs disbanded, the players formed St Stephen’s,” he said.

“In fact, Saints were already a club in their own right.

“At the time of the break-up, it was suggested to some of Dunkeld’s U/16 players that they could join St Stephen’s the following year, playing at U/18 level.

“Most of them did so.”

SPURS FAN JOHN STILL LOOKING

London-based Tottenham Hotspur historian JOHN LONGMAN is still on the trail of several former Spurs players.

“I’ve still not tracked down ALAN GRUBB,” said John. “But I’m told he has recently moved back to Scotland.

“Alan started out with East Fife, and, in addition to playing at White Hart Lane, also turned out for teams such as Walsall, Gloucester and Worcester.

“I really would love to get in touch with him.

“I’m also still on the trail of Aberdeen lad JOE FLEMING.

“Joe signed for Spurs from top junior outfit Banks o’ Dee, and also played for clubs such as Cardiff and Dover Athletic.”

WHEN LOGIE SCHOOL WORE UNITED’S HOOPS

Lochee’s ANDY WALKER, a lifelong Celtic fan, remembers the black-and-white barrelled hoops jerseys that Dundee United wore (see photo below), when they were promoted to Scotland’s top division in 1959-60, were donated to the Logie Junior Secondary School.

“They were worn by the third-year team,” recalled Andy.

“It used to cause mayhem between Dode Watt (an avid Dark Blue) and George “Beef” McKimmie, who was a dedicated Arab.

“Me? I was just happy to play in the “hoops”, even if it was a different shade.”
