| A by-election is being held on Thursday to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of SNP councillor Nigel Don to concentrate on being an MSP after he was elected to Holyrood as well as the local authority in May.
The by-election will be conducted under the same Single Transferable Vote system of pro-portional representation as in the full elections six months ago.
Lochee ward, which covers the former Camperdown, Lochee West, Ninewells and Balgay wards, qualifies for four councillors, although it will only be the place vacated by Mr Don which voters will be filling.
Under STV, instead of the traditional method of marking a cross against the name of one candidate, voters are asked to number candidates in order of preference.
Six candidates — representing the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, SNP, Scottish Socialist Party and Solidarity — are standing.
The result is expected around midday, barring recounts.
Details of candidates are featured on a new website aimed at promoting greater public interest and involvement in elections.
Votewise.co.uk has information about the candidates and what they see as the main issues in the by-election.
It also offers the opportunity to put questions to the candidates about election issues. |
