Audrey gets hitched in style!

Some brides may dream of a white Rolls Royce, others of a vintage Bentley, but for Dundee teacher Audrey Mackenzie her wedding day transport thoughts turned immediately to an AA recovery truck.
Audrey owes her unusual choice to her dad, Bob, who has been a recovery patrolman with the breakdown company for more than 20 years.

Having grown up in the shadow of a huge, yellow truck Audrey, who teaches at Morgan Academy, could think of no better option for her bridal transport, and husband Rick was happy to play along.

She said, “I was so thrilled when Dad said we would be able to have an AA truck for the wedding. Dad’s truck has always been part of my life, so it only seemed natural an AA truck should play a part on my big day.

“Rick was a bit surprised by the suggestion, but he soon came round to the idea. We even had a trial run to check I would be able to get in and out of the truck in my wedding dress!”

Bob said his daughter had talked about being driven to church in the breakdown truck since she was about 10, but he was surprised to find she was still as smitten as ever by the notion.

He and Audrey were ferried the few miles from their Invergowrie home to St Margaret’s Church, in Ancrum Road, by another AA patrol man, with the truck decked out in ribbons and lights and beacons flashing.

Bob said, “The truck was thoroughly valeted the day before, and Audrey and I sat in the crew cab behind the driver. Some of the guests were a bit dumbfounded, to say the least, when we pulled up at the church, but they were thrilled as well.

“After the wedding we were taken up to Piperdam for the reception, and Audrey was piped off the truck. It was quite an experience. I was so proud when Audrey said she wanted the AA truck for her wedding. At least we would have been OK if any of the other wedding cars had broken down!”
