| The 20-year-old, who will stay with the Irn Bru Second Division club meantime, but will train with United twice a week, will officially join United full-time when the transfer window opens on January 1.
United have stepped in ahead of First Division pacesetters Hamilton Accies, who tried to sign him earlier in the season.
Both halves of the Old Firm have also been linked with the player, who joined Berwick from Leith Athletic two seasons ago.
The player expressed his delight at joining the Tangerines, saying, “It’s great to sign for United and I can’t wait until January.
“I’ve been training with the club and feel I’ve got what it takes to come up to the pace.
“I had the chance to join Hamilton on the final day of the August transfer window, but I felt it was asking me for a decision too soon.
“Anyway, I want to play in the SPL, and Craig Levein has given me that chance.
“He’s also one of the main reasons I’ve chosen to come here because I really felt wanted and there are a good bunch of boys here.”
The Tannadice manager also expressed satisfaction that the deal was now complete.
He said, “I’ve been watching Danny for around two and a bit years from when I was with Leicester.
“I felt we had to move quickly to tie him up and that’s a measure of how highly we rate him.”
Coming hard on the heels of the signings of Morgaro Gomis from Cowdenbeath and Craig Conway from Ayr United, Craig admitted the lower leagues in Scotland is one area he keeps an eye on.
“There is not the same volume of young talent in the lower divisions as there used to be, but that’s only because the top clubs also have their youth teams at various age levels,” said Craig.
“I feel I’ve got two priorities at the moment.
“One is, obviously, to keep the first team as strong as possible, and the other is to think two years down the line.”
Craig, who, as a player, came from part-time into full-time (Cowdenbeath to Hearts), went on, “Obviously, I’ve got contacts at clubs such as Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers and others — so you do get alerted to talent coming through.
“I like to keep an eye on things and will act if I see an opportunity. With these three signings this year, it has paid off so far.”
United will meet St Johnstone in the Forfarshire Cup at Tannadice on Friday (2 pm). |
