Lib Dems’ waterfront warning

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen said Dundee’s waterfront development may be under threat from the outcome of the UK’s comprehensive spending review released today.
Mr Stephen was in Lochee to offer support to their new by-election candidate Chris Hall.

He also met with planning convener Fraser Macpherson and council planners to discuss the future of the city’s waterfront in light of recent events at Westminster and Holyrood.

Finance Minister John Swinney last month declined to offer assurances the SNP will continue funding the regeneration project in the event of the closure of the Cities Growth Fund.

Mr Stephen is concerned this may lead to a constriction of funds to the Cities scheme and hit Dundee’s waterfront development hard.

He said, “The waterfront development has cross-party support within Dundee City Council yet it’s future may be under threat by the SNP’s funding plans.

“The SNP has promised everything to everyone, but their sums just don’t add up and their election promises are falling down one by one.”

However, MP for Dundee East Stuart Hosie predicted the Scottish Government’s own spending plans will in fact show good news for Dundee.

And MSP for Dundee West Joe FitzPatrick, added, “Scaremongering by the Lib Dems on prestige projects such as the Waterfront project serves no useful purpose other than to get a cheap headline for their candidate.”
