New pressure to rehouse ex-soldier
The Dundee and Angus Scots Guards Association will make a forceful plea to Dundee Council chief executive Alex Stephen on Thursday to rehouse an injured former soldier (writes Graeme Strachan).
Welfare officer Vince Campbell today said mortar blast victim Sandy Gibson should be rehoused as soon as possible.

The association yesterday began a two-day demonstration in the City Square to raise awareness of Mr Gibson’s plight.

Mr Campbell cancelled the second day of the protest after being overwhelmed by yesterday’s response, which gathered a petition of 1000 signatures calling for Mr Gibson to be rehoused.

“We didn’t really expect the level of support we received yesterday,” said Mr Campbell.

“It reaffirmed the ancient and historic support Dundonians have for the armed forces.

“There is a great deal of support for Mr Gibson’s plight and disillusionment with Dundee City Council.

“We will be meeting with Alex Stephen on Thursday. We just want this to go away — rehouse him and let us get on with our lives.

“If the council don’t take appropriate action, we’ll seek to get as high a support as we can for our campaign from members of the aristocracy, MPs and every branch of the organisation. The support from the people of Dundee should be a message to the city council.”

The former soldier has been languishing in his first-floor flat in St Mungo’s Terrace for months because his injuries prevent him from climbing the stairs.

The 33-year-old father-of-two, seriously hurt during a live firing exercise in Germany in 1997, said the housing situation had put him and his fiancee Lorraine (25) under intolerable pressure.

Earlier this month the council said Mr Gibson is on a priority list for alternative housing, and the council “will provide him with new housing as soon as it becomes available”.
