Pool death: police plea
Police investigating the death of Dundee schoolboy Luke Hutton, who drowned at the city’s Olympia centre, are seeking to speak to a couple who were using the leisure pool on the evening he died (writes Graeme Strachan).
They were pushing a child on an orange float, shaped like a pair of glasses, prior to the pool closing on Saturday.

Officers are also appealing for other swimmers who were using the main pool at around 5pm — around an hour before Luke was found — to come forward.

The seven-year-old was discovered lying at the bottom of the pool around 6pm.

Whilst his death is not being treated as suspicious, the circumstances are the subject of a police inquiry and a full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in Dundee in due course.

Investigations are also being carried out by the centre operators, Dundee Leisure Trust, and the Health and Safety Executive.

Pool staff are being interviewed and CCTV images being studied to discover how Luke ended up in the deep end after being separated from his friends, who were a little older than him.

Staffing levels at the pool will be among the areas being looked at by safety officials.

A Dundee Leisure Trust spokesman said no member of staff has been suspended.

“Dundee Leisure Trust is carrying out its own inquiry as well as helping the investigations by the police and the Health and Safety Executive,” he said. He added that under- nine’s visiting Olympia have to be accompanied by an adult, but would not comment further.

Staff had pulled covers over the swimming pool as they closed up for the night.

A search was only conducted when his mother Gail (39), who accompanied him to the complex, reported him missing just before 6pm.

She had sat in the viewing area and waited for her son to finish his swim with his friends, but after they changed, they realised Luke was missing and told his mum, who raised the alarm.

The pool covers were pulled back and his body was found at the bottom a short time after he was reported missing.

Lifeguards pulled Luke out and attempted to resuscitate him. Efforts were then continued by paramedics.

Luke, a pupil at St Fergus primary, was a keen footballer and attended the Good News Youth Group every Wednesday night at Chalmers Ardler Church close to his home.

Police ask that anyone who was using the swimming pool between 4pm and 5pm, on Saturday who has not yet spoken to officers, should get in touch with them in Dundee on 01382 223200.
