| Almost two million people raised their mugs — and £6.7 million for Macmillan Cancer Support — at last year’s event.
Donations of cakes and treats from Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Dobbies ensured all the money collected by pupils at Monifieth’s Grange Primary would be handed over to the charity.
“We’re hoping that this will be Dundee’s biggest coffee morning so that we give this wonderful charity the support it deserves,” said Sarah Fletcher, chair of the charity committee at the High School of Dundee, where more than 600 pupils and teachers joined in.
Staff at Tayside Fire and Rescue HQ in Dundee’s Blackness Road entered into the spirit of the event, offering coffee and cakes to locals.
Politicians also got in on the act.
In Dundee, SNP staff invited workers from neighbouring organisations and passers-by to join them for a cuppa at the parliamentary offices.
In Perth, the SNP’s Pete Wishart MP and Roseanna Cunningham MSP also welcomed visitors to their constituency office.
“These coffee mornings are an excellent way to highlight the outstanding work done by Macmillan Cancer Support on behalf of those affected by serious illness,” Mr Wishart said.
“Macmillan do an outstanding job helping my constituents through some of the most difficult periods in their lives.
“It is only right that we make a contribution in highlighting the vital work they carry out on our behalf.”
North Tayside colleague John Swinney MSP also opened the doors of his office in Blairgowrie, while the Tories’ Murdo Fraser MSP invited all staff in the Scone Airport complex to join him for a cuppa.
More than 60 parents attended the brew-up at Kirkcaldy’s Strathallan Primary.
Office manager Sharon McIntosh said, “A minimum donation of £1 was made by everybody and its been a lovely morning.”
Now in its 17th year, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has raised a total of more than £35 million. |
