Farewell to Broughty lollipop duo

Long serving lollipop pair Audrey and Jim Greig will see pupils at Dundee’s Eastern Primary School safely across the road for the last time today.
The Greigs have decided to hang up their lollipops after a decade of service, during which time they have helped thousands of youngsters get to and from the Broughty Ferry school safely.

Dundee City Council education convener Councillor Laurie Bidwell joined school staff and pupils at the school for a special presentation today before the couple, who are both in their 70s, travel to Australia to see their first grandchild, two-week old Jamie.

“The presentation was absolutely lovely and my husband and I were delighted,” Mrs Greig said. “It was very emotional and I had to do everything to stop myself from crying.”

Mrs Greig first started as a supply lollipop lady, travelling to different schools around Dundee as required, before getting a permanent post at the bottom of Whinny Brae.

Shortly afterwards, her husband followed in her footsteps, taking up the vacant position at St Vincent Street and Brook Street.

“The weather was bad at times, but the kids always made it worth it,” Mrs Greig said.

The Greigs will now head to Australia for a well-earned three-month break.

“This has been a decade of tremendous service to the school and I would like to wish Mr and Mrs Greig all the best for the future,” said Councillor Bidwell.

“They will be greatly missed by the school community and the presentation today shows how much their contribution is appreciated by everyone connected with Eastern Primary.”
