| Lochee’s Tom Ferguson says he has received representations from several constituents.
He is also aware that people have written to the Tele’s letters page about the subject.
He said he had raised the matter with the council to see if there was some way apprenticeships could be monitored.
“The calls I have been getting are from people who are genuinely concerned about what is happening to some youngsters,” he said.
“We need young people going into apprenticeships and I don’t want to see them being disillusioned and put off the employment market.”
In letters to the Tele relatives and young people themselves have complained about the way they are being treated by some employers.
One said his boss had kept him on for two years and then paid him off for no apparent reason.
He said the firm used apprentices for cheap labour and when wages were due to rise, paid off the older ones.
Others said relatives had been paid as little as £2 an hour.
They had also been promised college courses, but these never materialised. |
