Peal curb proposed
Proposed restrictions on bell-ringing at Dundee’s Old Steeple would only apply to special occasions and will not interfere with church services or weddings, writes Brian Allison, local government reporter.
The city council’s leisure, arts and communities committee will be asked on Monday to approve recommendations to limit bell-ringing sessions following complaints from the public and local traders.

It is proposed one session of up to an hour be granted once a month and that requests for a full peal, which can last up to three and a half hours, would only be allowed on an occasional basis and not more than once a year unless in exceptional circum-stances such as a national celebration or significant local anniversary.

Where possible peals would take place out of office hours to minimise impact on local business. It’s the three-hour plus peal that has caused most adverse reaction.
