Football: Blether with Brown > Touchline

Craig keeps lofty aspirations in check

STUART DUFF is set for a return to Dundee United’s starting line-up against Gretna at Fir Park tomorrow.

An encouraging start to the season has had fans checking the record books and eyeing the top of the league, but Craig’s Levein’s attention will be focused on three points and nothing else as Dundee United clash with Gretna tomorrow (writes Tom Duthie).
With neither of the Old Firm in action until Sunday, a win at Fir Park would leave the Tangerines trailing leaders Celtic only on goal difference.

And the points tally of 13 from the opening six games represents the best return since 1992 and Jim McLean’s last season in charge of the team.

At this early stage of the campaign, though, the present manager is not interested in such statistics.

“People need to stay calm — as I said at the beginning of the week, we’ve achieved nothing yet,” said Craig.

“And I can assure you, no-one here is thinking about where we might be tomorrow night. The only thing we are thinking about is trying to win another game — I mean that.”

That the fans are eyeing such a lofty position is thanks largely to an excellent defensive record that has seen just two league goals conceded.

With Christian Kalvenes out for a month with a torn calf, there will be an enforced change to the rearguard and the manager has confirmed the left-back slot will go to utility man Stuart Duff.

“It’s a blow losing Christian because he’s been excellent, but we have Stuart and he will come in,” said Craig. “He’s not a natural left-back, but, in the previous games we’ve played him there, he’s always done OK, so we’re going to go with him.”

Fresh from signing a contract extension on Tuesday, midfielder Morgaro Gomis is backing in contention after missing Sunday’s win over St Mirren through suspension and looks likely to start.

While United are flying high, having taken just one solitary point so far, Gretna are still in search of a first top-flight win.

Craig, though, has warned this has the potential to be as tough as any away fixture at this level.

“We’ll be regarded as favourites for this game, but we’ve not done enough to deserve that away from home against anyone.

“I’ve been telling the players that they need to be at their best. We’ve had Gretna watched four times and they’ve not been playing badly.

“I watched them against Hibs and they were 2-0 up at half-time and deserved to be. It’s going to be a really tough game.”

Dee prepared to grind out another three points
Dundee boss Alex Rae is relying on his team’s ability to grind out results on the road to bring another success when they travel to Stirling Albion tomorrow (writes Tom Duthie).
Unbeaten in the league, the Dark Blues will be hot favourites to take the points against newly-promoted Albion, but Alex believes only a battling display will ensure that.

After chalking up wins on difficult away trips to places like Livingston and Clyde, he is confident that can happen.

“This will not be easy. A lot of people thought Stirling would get rolled over when they came up to the First Division, but they’ve held there own against some of the bigger clubs in the division already and they’ve played better than their points total suggests,” he said.

“If we are going to come away from there with a win, it will be because we’ve gone about our business in the proper manner.

“The fact we have already done that in tough away games is encouraging, but we must make sure that attitude continues.”

Goalkeeper Ludovic Roy is not quite fit enough to be considered for a return after his calf problem, so Craig Samson will get another opportunity to continue his impressive form.

Changes could come in attack, where Bob Davidson and Jani Sturm started against Dunfermline last week. By the end of the draw with the Pars, though, both Derek Lyle and Jan Zemlik had been introduced and at least one of them looks set to start.

“I’ve a fair idea in my head who the front two are going to be. What’s important is that all four are available, because then, if things don’t quite work out, we have the option of freshening them up.

“It’s nice going into games knowing that, if you make changes during them, you are sending on players who can hurt the opposition.”

Missing out against his old club will be wide man David O’Brien after he had to have a hernia operation that will sideline him for up to six weeks.

“It something that just flared up suddenly,” explained Alex.

“David was in a lot of pain and the best thing all round was to get it seen to straight away and have him back as quickly as possibly, because he is doing well.”

Saints hope Rocco recovers
St Johnstone hope Rocco Quinn will have recovered from injury in time to take his place in the team for tomorrow’s away First Division match against Morton (writes James Masson).
Definitely out injured are Kevin James, Steven Milne, Peter MacDonald and Martin Hardie.

After winning against Partick Thistle at home last Saturday, Saints are keen to make it two in a row with keeper Alan Main also keen to keep the club’s good defensive record going.

“We’ve lost only one goal in our last four 90 minutes of football and the defence looks a lot more confident,” he said.

“But Morton tomorrow is a tough game. There will be a big home support and they’re a decent side but a win and another clean sheet will do us nicely.”

Saints’ manager Owen Coyle backed up Alan’s claim about Morton’s support and their team, and he believes tomorrow’s match will be played in a great atmosphere.

Since arriving at the club just before the transfer deadline, Kenny Deuchar has netted twice and will again lead Saints’ forwards tomorrow.

“Kenny has made a great impact,” said Owen. “He’s not only scored goals but has led the line well.”
