Countdown for Craig
There is work to be done and options both in terms of numbers and style to be considered, but the chances of Dundee United adding another striker to their ranks before the transfer window closes tomorrow night are looking good (writes Tom Duthie).
With the clock ticking towards the deadline, boss Craig Levein is putting in the hours to make sure he gets the experienced man he wants.

Names being linked with a switch to the City of Discovery included Aberdeen’s former Dundee front man Steve Lovell, Scott Dobie of Nottingham Forest and even Hearts’ Czech Republic international Roman Bednar.

However, while declining to discuss specific names, Craig made it clear none of the above trio would be joining up at Tannadice, although it is clear he is making progress toward getting the player he is after.

“Until I have a name on a piece of paper, I won’t be talking about which player is coming, but I do have two or three players on my list,” he said.

“There are different styles and a few complications still to be sorted out and now it is about sitting down and working out the best option.”

One complication with a possible move for Lovell would have been the player making it clear he believes he still has a future at Pittodrie. Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood may not see things that way, however, and offloading the Englishman could free up cash for an attempt at luring former Scotland international Dobie to the Granite City — the Aberdeen interest in him has already been confirmed.

Meanwhile, with Hearts apparently in a state of almost permanent turmoil, Bednar would jump at the chance to ply his trade elsewhere. However, although a move to United has been ruled out, West Brom have been credited with an interest in the front man.

Turning to the striker already signed up — Sheffield United’s Jordan Robertson — while Craig was delighted with the teenager’s debut winner in last night’s CIS Cup success over Ross County, he was keen to stress too much too soon should not be expected of the new man.

“He had a very good last 20 minutes and showed he has the makings of a good player. From my point of view, it was great to see him scoring because that always helps strikers settle.

“However, he is still a young boy and a work in progress. Only when he is doing it week in week out for 90 minutes can we regard him as a top player and, by the time that happens, he’ll probably be back in Sheffield.”

Looking towards Saturday’s visit of Falkirk, Prince Buaben is a doubt after picking up a strain last night.

Samson set to retain place
CIS Cup penalty shoot-out hero Craig Samson will continue between the sticks for Dundee when they attempt to keep their unbeaten league run going at Clyde on Saturday (writes Tom Duthie).
Boss Alex Rae was happy with the big keeper, who made two vital spot-kicks stops as Livingston were edged out of the competition on Tuesday and, with club captain Ludovic Roy still feeling the calf strain that has sidelined him for two games, Samson will see more action this weekend.

“Ludo is making good progress, but his calf is not quite right and we have targeted the Dunfermline game in a fortnight for him,” said the gaffer.

“I’ve no worries about using big Craig and I was happy with his performance against Partick last Saturday as well as the work he did on Tuesday.”

Dundee welcomed another foreign trialist for training today, while Jamaican defender Nathan Koo-Boothe continues to go through his paces.

As both are free agents, there is no rush to have them signed up before tomorrow’s transfer deadline and Alex does not expect any business to be done then.

Next week, Koo-Boothe, and possibly the other trialist, is likely to be involved in a closed-door game.

“I’m trying to get a game fixed up so I can get a good look at Nathan. He has a very good attitude and has been doing well so far, but his fitness is quite a bit behind the rest of the boys here and that is a bit of a problem,” added Alex.

Paul Dixon and Kevin McDonald have been put on stand-by for the Scotland U/21 squad ahead of next month’s European Championship qualifiers against Denmark and Finland.
