| The drama began around 10pm after residents alerted police after hearing loud bangs in the area around Longtown Place.
Armed police raced to the scene and immediately erected barriers.
Firearms officers with dogs then conducted a raid on a house in Mid Craigie’s Drumlanrig Drive around 8am. It’s thought they found the house empty.
The cordon remained in place around Longtown Place, Longtown Terrace and Mauchline Avenue, with police asking residents to sign in and out.
Officers were today searching a number of properties and scenes of crimes officers were conducting a fingertip search at the scene of the incident.
Officers in boiler suits were on their hands and knees in the street looking for evidence in the cordoned off area. Door-to-door inquiries were also being completed.
It’s the second time in the space of two months that armed police have been involved in an armed swoop in the Mid Craigie area.
In early July, they also raided a house in Drumlanrig Drive and two men were remanded in custody on a petition alleging firearms offences, but were later released.
Today shocked residents spoke to the Tele.
One woman said, “I heard a loud bang and thought it was a car backfiring.
“When I got up today a neighbour said there had been a shooting. Now we’re having to sign in and out just to get out of our homes.”
A man said he woke up to the sound of banging.
He added, “I looked out and armed police were raiding the house just down the street. The house seemed to be empty and they left empty handed.”
Tayside Police later issued a statement confirming an operation was mounted following a report that a firearm may have been discharged in the Longtown Place area last night.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the inquiry. |
