Micky minus Logie strip!

Dundee’s Jim Jardine, perhaps better-known for his involvement with Dundee United supporters’ groups, was once a budding right-back.

And, just to prove it, he sent in a photo (see foot of column).

“I thought you might be interested in this photo I found while delving through photo albums from 1968,” he said.

“It’s of the St Joseph’s U/18 team from 1968 and they played in the Angus Amateur League.

“I’m sure you will agree there were some tremendous players in the team.

“However, at that time, the standard of teams at U/18 — especially St Francis, St Columba’s and Lochee Boys Club — was so high that it was difficult to compete, but this team gave these crack outfits a run for their money.

“The photo reveals a very rare time that Mickey Hall didn’t have a Logie Harp strip on.

“George Moir obviously had a bit of growing to do!

“He was a left-back in those days as Peter Keir was the ideal centre-half as he showed in later years, most notably with Osborne.

“Goalkeeper Sandy ‘Sy’ Thompson went on to sign for Dundee United — and most of the rest had good careers in the juvenile and amateur leagues.

“And, of course, the team was managed by the former Dundee Citizen of the Year, Father Boyle of St Joseph’s Church.”

URQUHART CUP SITS PROUDLY IN VICS’ TROPHY CABINET . . .

NEIL HARDIE responded in double quick time to our appeal (BwB, Aug. 3) to locate the Urquhart Cup.

The whereabouts of the trophy was asked for by former Elmwood goalkeeper KEN GILROY.

“I can confirm the trophy is in the safe-keeping of Arbroath Vics,” said Neil, secretary of the Ogilvy Park side.

“You may wonder why a Dundee Junior trophy should be in the possession of a club from Angus, but I think I can shed some light on the matter.

“I’m sure that the Urquhart Cup was used by the then Midlands Association as the trophy for the Midlands League Cup when it was formed back in the late 1960s.

“Vics beat Carnoustie Panmure 1-0 in a final replay at Gayfield Park on April 24, 1974, following a 2-2 draw at Craigie Park on April 3, 1974.”

Neil was able to name the teams for the replay at Gayfield:

Vics — Phillip; Kettles, Welsh, E. Smith, G. Smith, McCluskey, Rourke, Suttie, Mollison, Boyack, Billingham. Subs — Kinnear and Craig.

Carnoustie Panmure — Closs; Will, A. Martin, McLardy, Ritchie, Watson, Hill, Butchart, D. Martin, McNicoll, Smith. Subs — Laing and Christie.

The referee was Don Howey.

He continued, “The Vics goalscorer was Stewart Mollison, who did not complete the 90 minutes as he sustained a broken leg.

“It was the following season that the Midlands set-up changed its name to Tayside, and Vics were allowed to keep the trophy.

“It’s quite possible that a new one was put forward by a sponsor (possibly Dewar’s Whisky) to be competed for under a new name.

“The trophy is still played for as we have a challenge match against Arbroath FC for the Urquhart Cup each season.

“In fact, it was sitting in the boardroom at Gayfield for several seasons until we won it back last year,” explained Neil.

Neil also revealed that Vics celebrate their 125th anniversary this year and they have yet to set a date to play for the trophy this year.

“We are hoping to include a guest or two, similar to our centenary celebrations when George Best guested.

“We are also holding a Sportsman’s Dinner on October 12 to celebrate the occasion. Guest speakers are ex-Nottingham Forest and Leeds United striker Duncan McKenzie and St Johnstone manager Owen Coyle.

Tayport’s JIM RODGER also has reference to the Urquhart Cup.

“Around 1954, I played for the Dundee Junior Select against Fife in a return leg at North End Park, Fife having won the first leg 2-0 at Methil,” recalled Jim.

“We won this return leg 5-2, having been 2-0 down at one stage.

“I’m fairly certain the trophy at stake was the Urquhart Cup.

“My memory is a little shaky, but, certainly, other members of the Dundee squad were Bobby Reid (goalkeeper, Harp), Bobby Clark (right-back, Violet), George Bennett (left-half, Carnoustie) and Jimmy Reid (inside-right, St Joseph’s and later, with distinction, Dundee United).

“Incidentally, two very important Wormit players featured in the photograph of the Arnot team of 1943 (Aug. 3) — Sym Campbell and Frank ‘Foy’ Robertson, who also made Kenilworth the best Half-Holiday League team in the area, both being railway men.

CELTIC BOSS ENLISTS BwB . . .

Celtic boss GORDON STRACHAN wants BwB readers to help him track down his former Dundee FC team-mate WILSON HOGGAN.

It all came about when the Hoops were playing at the Falkirk Stadium last weekend and Strachan came into the Pressroom, which also doubles up as a Falkirk Legends room.

Hoggan (pictured at foot of column) starred for the Bairns before being transferred to Dundee in 1974 for £30,000.

In the company of my colleague, Sunday Post football writer RON SCOTT, he was tickled to see Hoggan’s picture.

“There’s Hoggie,” he exclaimed. “We were team-mates at Dens.

“Do you know where he is now?”

Ron replied that he didn’t, but said, “I know a man who might be able to help.”

So, it’s over to you once again.
