40 racist crimes in Tayside
Police in Tayside have dealt with 40 racist crimes in the region since the bomb attacks at Glasgow Airport in June (writes Jamie Black).
In the week after the failed attacks, police recorded four incidents they believe were related to the events in Glasgow.

However, the force moved quickly to give reassurances that this does not constitute a rise in racially motivated crimes. The number of racist crimes recorded for the same period last year was also 40.

The new figures were revealed after Strathclyde Police confirmed they had seen a noticeable rise in the number of racially motivated attacks in response to the terror strikes.

Between July 1 and 27, there were 258 reported racial attacks, 31 of which were airport-related, according to Strathclyde Police.

Figures were not available for the whole of Scotland and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland issued a statement saying that, while there had been a rise in Strathclyde, the reaction has now calmed down.

The nature of the attacks in Tayside includes racist graffiti and verbal abuse. There has only been one case of an attempted physical attack but police dealt with the incident promptly.

Chief Inspector Hugh Robson said there was no significant increase in racist crimes but acknowledged that some instances had been related to the bombings in June.

He said, “We have had 40 crimes of this nature since June 30 in the Tayside area. In the week following the terrorist attacks in Glasgow, we dealt with four incidents which we can say were related to those attacks. They included verbal abuse and graffiti.”

The Chief Inspector was keen to emphasise the strong community relations established in the region and that police had engaged productively with minority groups since the attacks.

He added, “Following on from the incidents in Glasgow, all forces have engaged further with the community and the relevant groups in the area in order to reassure them. We have continued to work with the community contacts that already exist and all crimes have been dealt with thoroughly by the police.”
