£1m Porter in United sights
Dundee United were remaining tight-lipped today about the chances of £1 million-rated Oldham striker Chris Porter doing an “Andy Webster” and moving to them on what would effectively be a free transfer (writes Tom Duthie).
Over the weekend, it emerged that Porter was considering a move to Tannadice and, because under FIFA rules that counts as a cross-border transfer and he is in the final year of his contract with the Latics, it would not involve United having to pay a fee.

That’s led to his club’s co-owners, chairman Simon Blitz and managing director Simon Corney, threatening to quit football if the deal goes through.

Whatever the rulebook says, they believe they are morally entitled to compensation for the 23-year-old, who scored 23 goals in 37 starts last season and has been tracked by a string of big clubs.

From the Tangerines’ point of view, though, over the weekend chairman Eddie Thompson has confirmed an interest and he is satisfied they are working within the rules.

It’s understood Porter will give his answer in the next day or so and, in advance of that, Tannadice boss Craig Levein has declined to comment.

If the player decides to move, it will be in identical circumstances to those that saw Andy Webster quit Hearts for Wigan last year.

And Porter would have to be mindful that, should he fail to settle and want to head back to England within a year, he would be obliged to pay the equivalent of a transfer fee to Oldham — reports of his valuation vary between £700,000 and £1 million.

United, meanwhile, have made it clear they expect another striker — Thierry Henry — to be making an appearance at Tannadice next month.

The French superstar was at the Nou Camp today undergoing a medical before completing his £16 million move from Arsenal, but reports this morning stated his debut for the Catalans would be against Hearts at Murrayfield — two days after the July 26 friendly in Dundee.

That was news to United, who have a contract with match organisers Platinum One which states all fit and available first-team players must be involved.

The only exceptions to that are Argentine striker Lionel Messi, who will still be on holiday because of his involvement in the Copa America, and Barca captain Carles Puyol, who is out injured for three months.

Back to business at Dens

Dundee defender PAUL DIXON was quick off the mark as the Dark Blues began pre-season training today. Dixon is watched by team-mates KEVIN McDONALD (No. 7) BRIAN CLARK (No. 20) and recently-signed goalkeeper CRAIG SAMSON (No. 8).

There were plenty of fresh faces on view as Dundee kicked off pre-season training today with a tough double session (writes Tom Duthie).
Goalkeeper Craig Samson was with the squad as he signed the one-year deal agreed with boss Alex Rae at the end of last week, and also meeting their team-mates for the first time were summer signings David Worrell and David O’Brien.

And, as expected, a midfielder and a centre forward from the Czech Republic began trial spells with the Dark Blues.

That, and the fact his entire squad were free of injury as they reported back after the summer break, made the manager a happy man.

“It’s good to be back and it is very pleasing that we do not have anyone being forced to miss out the first sessions, because we do not want people playing catch-up when we are putting the hard fitness work in,” said Alex.

As well as getting back to training himself, Alex is also still working towards adding more new faces and, while he had nothing concrete to report, there could be developments on that front soon.

“I am at the stage of waiting for a couple of phone calls and, when they come, I will have a clearer picture of the chances of more people coming in this week,” he added.

Fixture clash resolved
Following amicable discussions, Dundee United and Dundee have reached agreement to avoid fixture clashes next season (writes Tom Duthie).
Subject to the approval of the SPL and Scottish League, the United v. St Mirren clash scheduled for Saturday, September 15, will be moved to the following day at 3 pm. The visit of Kilmarnock on Saturday, November 10, will remain as scheduled, as will the game against Gretna on Saturday December 22.

That means Dundee will host Dunfermline on Saturday, September 15, face Clyde on Sunday, November 11, and Hamilton Accies on Saturday, November 24.
