LIVED ABOVE DODDSIE

Former Dundee United footballer ALLAN BOATH, now living in New Zealand, came across some of the BwB articles on the internet.

“There always seem to be names I remember,” said Allan (rkaraka@xtra. co.nz).

“The latest were Davie Gollan and Colin McDonald (Feb. 9), who, like myself, now live in NZ.

“Kenny Payne was also in the Feb. 9 photo, and his brother was Graeme.

“Trawling back, a January 2005 article gave mention of Davie Dodds (see picture at foot of column) — and that brought memories flooding back.

“Not only did we play in the same team we also lived in the same ‘closie’ — No. 60 Provost Road. Doddsie was on the second landing and we were on the top.

“I have so many memories of that period that it’s hard to relate them to anyone over here unless they played in Dundee at the same time I did.

“These times are what I would consider a great era for football in Dundee (being a youngster).”

Allan, of course, was a member of the New Zealand squad which played in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and were in Scotland’s section.

He played in all three games, the others against Brazil and Russia.

I sent Allan a return message from my home email address, which contains the word “Pele”.

Tickled, Allan answered that he had met the great man personally in 1982.

CHARITY FIVES FOR BERT’S TROPHY

Dundee postman GRAEME BRYMER, a family friend for many years, is organising a Scotland v. England charity five-a-side tournament.

“This is the first year of the tournament and it will be held in Sunderland on Saturday, June 2,” said Douglas-based Graeme.

“It will then be held in Dundee next year.

“Money raised will be split 50-50, with our concerns being the RNLI and a Christmas party and presents for underprivileged kids in Dundee.

“The teams will play for The Bert Slater Trophy, named after Dundee’s legendary former goalkeeper.

“The SFA have been great, too, and have given us the actual strips which Scotland wore when they won the Kirin Cup in Japan.”

BLAIRGOWRIE JUNIORS’ 60th ANNIVERSARY

My good chum DENNIS ELDER popped down to my house with information on BLAIRGOWRIE JUNIOR FC’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

“We’re having a Sportsman’s Dinner in the Angus Hotel on Saturday, September 15,” said Dennis, a former Berrypickers’ player who also played for Dundee FC.

“Obviously, we’d like as many former players and officials as possible to attend in what promises to be a great night.

“Anyone with former connections with the club can get in touch with me on 01382 827426 or 07711 038775.”

Below are team photos from a few years back.
