The monument is located on a short pier at the Dundee side between the bridge and the Hilton Hotel.

Thoughtless vandals had daubed a wash of graffiti on the aggregate monument, which Mr Crerar is ensuring is removed.

Mr Crerar said, “That memorial is there to honour people who lost their lives.

“We get quite a lot of vandalism in that area and it’s disappointing.

“We’ll get it repaired and back to pristine condition as soon as possible.”

However, this was proving tricky, he said.

“As it’s exposed aggregate it’s difficult as the paint seeps into the concrete.

“We’ve taken the worst of it off and we will need to re-assess it again.”

He added they would do everything within their power to have the memorial restored to its previous state.
