A Harris Academy pupil has given a massive boost to a national charity campaign which hopes to see a new world record set in Arbroath next month.
Jennifer Heilbronn (14), from Invergowrie, decided to collect shoes and donations for the One Step Beyond appeal to fulfil the service element of her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Undertaking a poster and flyer campaign in Invergowrie, Jennifer rallied family and friends to collect as many pairs as possible.

As a result, she has amassed around 250 pairs of shoes and secured the support of Stephen Fry and Daniel Radcliffe.

Jennifer explained, “I did get a lot of shoes from family and friends and people around Invergowrie. I also had quite a large donation from the North of Scotland Water Authority office in the village.

“I managed to get the celebrity shoes as Stephen Fry went to school with my dad and he sent a pair of bright green monster slippers, and we have a family connection to Daniel Radcliffe — I was quite excited to get his shoes, as I do like the Harry Potter films.

“I really enjoyed doing the shoe collection. It was hard work but it was definitely worthwhile.”

Both celebrities enclosed personal letters with their shoes, in his, Daniel Radcliffe tells Jennifer, “When I was filming the third Harry Potter film, I knew I’d be going back to school before I started the fourth film.

“However, when it came to trying on my old school shoes, they were far too small for me.

“Luckily the costume department on the Potter films were generous enough to give me the shoes I had worn in the movie and so the shoes I’m donating were Harry’s first and then mine. And Harry would like to apologise for any odour!”

Both pairs will be included in the One Step Beyond record setting attempt at Victoria Park, Arbroath, on Sunday, June 17.

Campaign Organiser Kay Gilmour, said, “It’s a pleasure to see a young person get involved and work so hard. Jennifer’s achievement is certainly a credit to her and I would like to thank her profusely for her help and wish her every success with her Duke of Edinburgh award.”

Further donations to One Step Beyond can still be made at The Shore, Shore Terrace in Dundee or at Angus College, either in Arbroath or at any of the Community Learning Centres in Forfar, Montrose, Brechin or Kirriemuir. Collections can be arranged by calling 01241 432777.
