Muggers ‘dregs of society’
Muggers who target vulnerable elderly people have been branded the “dregs of society” by a campaigner for pensioners’ rights (writes Stefan Morkis).

Dundee advocacy officer for Age Concern Ian Borthwick said he had been left sickened by a series of incidents where women in their 70s and 80s have been attacked and robbed in the street.

Two weeks ago, 81-year-old Cathie McCabe suffered a broken arm and pelvic bone when she tried to fight off a mugger in Main Street.

Then, on Saturday, a 72 year-old woman had her handbag stolen as she walked in Byron Street beside St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

Police are still hunting the muggers responsible for the attacks.

Mr Borthwick said today, “Unfortunately, we have now seen another incident where criminals have preyed on vulnerable elderly people.

“Often these sort of crimes are committed by people who have drug problems and are stealing to feed their habits.

“But it is almost beyond comprehension that anyone would stoop so low. They’re nothing but the dregs of society.”

Mr Borthwick said that elderly people should take a few simple precautions to minimise the chances of becoming a victim of street robbery.

“People should not carry significant amounts of cash with them and make sure it is concealed,” he said.

“If possible, they should keep to streets that are well lit and walk in pairs.”

The man responsible for Saturday’s incident is described as being in his 20s and wearing a blue hooded top and jeans.

Police also want to speak to the driver of a red Ford Mondeo who helped the victim.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tayside Police on Dundee 223200.
