Smoke zone being wiped off map
All patients and visitors to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital will soon be able to enjoy the fresh air in pleasant surroundings (writes Marjory Inglis, medical reporter).
The former smoking area, adjacent to the hospital’s main entrance, is getting a facelift and will re-open shortly for use by everyone, with the smokers banished.

Now, as NHS Tayside continues to promote its ban on smoking that includes hospital grounds, attempts are being made to eradicate all evidence of the former purpose of the area. It is now surrounded by temporary metal fencing, with the high hedges that once screened smokers from sight having already been pulled down.

Pedestrians are currently being re-routed, the usual path to the main hospital entrance has been blocked off, and those on foot are being channelled past the bike sheds.

Today, Ninewells site manager Brian Main said landscaping work had started on the area and would be completed quickly, transforming the function of the ground.

He said, “We are really just changing its appearance and, instead of it being set aside for smokers, it will be a nice place for everyone to sit, with benches.”
