Blether with Brown - 26 April 2007
Football News:  Touchline

UNDEFEATED . . . EXCEPT FOR LITTLE BLIP

GEORGE McGREGOR, of G lentruim Terrace, Dundee, sent in a 53-year-old photo.

“The photo is of my primary school football team, Downfield,” said George, well-known for his role behind the scenes with Dundee FC.

“We really had a super team and nearly swept the boards in that 1953-54 season.

“We won our C Division league, going through all games undefeated, and were the first winners of the new shield.

“We also won the Sports Cup at Tannadice, defeating our opponents Dens Road 6-1.

“Our only blip was that we were runners-up in the A. C. Little Cup, losing 3-2 to St Michael’s at Downfield Park.

“Two or three of our team did very well in the game in future years.

“Ian Sharp was capped for the Scotland U/15s team, and Jimmy Duff was another super player who teamed up with me at Dundee Schoolboys and Butterburn YC.

“Tragically, he died of leukaemia at just 19-years-old.

“Bruce Martin also teamed up with me at Butterburn YC and went on to play junior with Carnoustie Panmure.

“Kenny Dick was a senior with Dundee United, Forfar Athletic and QOS.

“Kenny, in fact, is still currently involved in the game, as he referees amateur games in the city.

“And that at the ripe young age of 65!

“I’ve been retired for eight years after working half my life in the North Sea with BP.

“I’m a lifelong Dundee FC fan and I host the match sponsor’s lounge at Dens.

“If any of my ‘young’ team-mates fancy a couple of beers and a good old ‘blether’, you’ll get me on 07950 664309.”

George’s photo (below) features the following:

Front row — Donnie Hunt, Bruce Martin, Kenny Dick, Russell Clark, George McGregor.

Moving on to another subject, George came back on after Manchester United had humbled Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford.

“This has been portrayed as one of the greatest European Cup wins by some in the media,” said George.

“But I think Dundee’s 8-1 win over Cologne in 1962 was a better result.

“Dundee, too, went 3-0 up quite early in the game and really swamped the Germans, who, unlike, Roma, were actual champions of their league.”

logie harp kick off ceLEbrations

Tomorrow, at the DISC (KO 1 pm), Logie Harp AFC will kick-off their 40th anniversary year celebrations with a match involving past and present players.

Current secretary Dave Anderson commented, “Tomorrow is sure to be a great day and it will be great to see many old faces again.

“The club would like to give a big thank you to all the committee members whose dedication has kept the club alive for the past 39 years.

“Founded in 1968 by Derek McGlone and Jimmy Snaith, we joined the Angus Amateur League.

“The club grew from strength to strength through the 1970s and early 80s with the addition of Bobby Cumming, Bill Fowler (Tid) and Jackie Dunn to the backroom staff, and became one of the leading amateur teams in Dundee during that period.

“In that spell, we were crowned Division Two champions, then Division One champions four times, in addition to many cup successes such as Thomson Trophy, James Oliver Trophy and Angus Challenge Cup.

“With the addition of Brian Banks as manager during season 1984/85, the club had won all the silverware on offer in the Angus Amateur League and sought new challenges.

“We joined the Midland Amateur FA in 1986/87. Since then, we have been Division Two champions, Tay Valley Shield winners and North of Tay Cup finalists.

“Charlie Adam is, perhaps, their best-known player, having gone on to play for Dundee United. Frazer Fitzpatrick was the Tayport goalkeeper in some of their Scottish Cup-winning teams, while Davie Bairstow was capped for amateur Scotland.”

The team on the left is from the first season. Dave has tried to get all the names, but some have still to be identified.

Back row (from left) — Derek McGlone, Danny McCluskey, Bobby Stark, Jim McCally, Willie Reekie, Tam (surname unknown), Jackie Dunn, Jimmy Snaith. Front row — Jimmy Gill, Peter Warrick, Bill Fowler, unknown, unknown.
