| Instead of 29 wards with one councillor representing each, there will be just eight wards, but all of them will return several elected members under the new Proportional Representation voting system that is being introduced.
Five of the wards will elect four people while the remainder will return three, maintaining the city’s total of 29 councillors.
In numerical order the new multi-member wards will be called Strathmartine, Lochee, West End, Coldside, Maryfield, East End, North East and Ferry.
The five that will return four councillors are Strathmartine, Lochee, West End, Coldside and Ferry, while the others will have three elected members.
Each of the new electoral areas comprises all or part of several existing wards.
Boundaries do not exactly dovetail because of the need to even up numbers of electors as far as possible and take into account local communities.
Strathmartine is made up of the former Ardler, Brackens, Balgowan and Strathmartine wards.
Lochee takes in Camperdown, Lochee West, Ninewells and Balgay.
West End has Riverside, Logie and Tay Bridges.
Coldside comprises Lochee East, Law, Bowbridge, and parts of Fairmuir and Hilltown.
Maryfield covers Stobswell, East Port, Baxter Park and parts of Fairmuir and Hilltown.
East End replaces Craigiebank, Pitkerro and Douglas.
North East has Claverhouse, Longhaugh, Whitfield and the Hawick Drive area of Balgillo.
Ferry is West Ferry, Broughty Ferry, Barnhill and the rest of Balgillo.
Because of the comprehensive change in the electoral geography of Dundee and the Single Transferable Vote system of PR, it will not be possible to make direct comparisons with the results from the last council elections in 2003.
There will not be one winner of any of the new wards.
Instead, either four or three councillors will be elected in each of them. |
