Spring has sprung too soon

Horticulturists at Dundee College have been cursing the recent good weather as they prepare for the city’s Spring Garden Show this weekend at the Ice Arena.
Gardeners have been battling the elements in an effort to stave off early blooming of plants.

The college’s Gordon Croll, along with head gardener Willie Barber, is arranging a display of daffodils and hyacinths, but have not found the warmer April climate to their advantage.

Gordon said, “The challenge has been to stop the plants flowering too early.

“Whether it is global warming, or just a spell of better weather, the past few years have seen our spring bulbs come into bloom earlier and earlier.

“We used to take part in spring shows when we had to force flowers to bloom before their time, which is easier than holding them back.”

The show is at the Ice Arena this Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-5pm.
