Penalised for having NCR pension
I AM one of the many who is being made redundant from NCR. Recently I had a chat with a representative from the local unemployment office, (sorry employment office) and was told I would receive £9 per week after 12 weeks of being unemployed.

The reason for this low amount is that I would be receiving a monthly pension (I’m 50) plus redundancy money and would be over the threshold for a full Jobseekers Allowance.

To say the formula for working these payments out sticks in the craw is an understatement.

Redundancy money is not a gift. It is a way of cushioning the effects of being thrown on the dole.

My pension is something to which I contributed a lot of money over the years. To penalise myself and many others (and I bring state pensioners into this argument too) is nothing short of a scandal.

Why should people who have saved and made sacrifices over many years, when others who have no intention of working are given every penny they have (and seem to have a good life) be required to give back all they have worked for and earned just to subsidise these wasters?

I know there are genuine claimants, but many are not. — George Craigie, Dalcraig Avenue, Dundee.

One rule for one

A bus parked outside Dundee High School.

I WOULD like to clarify with Tayside Police, what gives Dundee High School the right to park its pupils’ buses on a clearly marked yellow zigzag keep clear area outside the school.

I could understand if the police don’t see this but it happens almost on a daily basis and is just a few yards from a police controlled CCTV camera.

Is this a case of one rule for one and one for another? I have included a photograph. — Legally Parked.

[Tayside Police said it was a matter for Dundee City Council.

A spokeswoman for the council said, “No dispensation has been issued to allow Dundee High School to park its pupils’ buses on the yellow zigzag keep clear area.

“Parking attendants will take appropriate enforcement action should they come across any vehicle parked in contravention of

restrictions except in the case of legally-exempt vehicles (police, ambulance and fire services.”]

Upset over grave stickers
MY FAMILY regularly visits our parents’ grave at Dundee’s Balgay Cemetery.

Stickers and a pole covering the stone have been placed there by Dundee City Council.

To our knowledge the stone is not damaged in any way.

We feel this is a way the council raises unnecessary money from families.

I know of a family which paid out money months ago and their stone is not repaired yet.

Do we have to get it repaired through the council or can someone else help?

It is very upsetting to see the stone like that. — Worried daughter.

[A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council said, “The council tests the headstones in the cemeteries for health and safety reasons and make them temporarily safe if necessary.

“Families are then contacted to make them aware of the situation and are asked to get the headstone repaired. The council does not make money from this.

“If the reader would like to get in touch with the department on 01382 432885, the details concerning their headstone will be explained to them,”]

Dundee must not be complacent
A SURVEY, reported in the Tele, found a quarter of Aberdeen shoppers sometimes shopped in the City of Discovery. While this is encouraging for Dundee, the city cannot afford to become complacent.

With more than 22,000 commuters entering and leaving the city daily, the city centre is a nightmare at peak times. Car parking is limited to around 3700 spaces. Parking charges, especially at weekends, are out of step with some rival centres.

Despite the negative impact congestion has on consumers, the city has still to implement proactive measures such as park and ride.

Dundee is quickly gaining a reputation as a retail hot-spot. But if the Aberdeen success is to be built on, Dundee’s officials need to act quickly. — Downfield Reader.

Don’t feed the birds
I WAS in the town recently and decided to have a seat outside Dundee’s Overgate shopping centre.

I found the ground was all stained with large drag marks and a woman and boy were feeding birds. Within five minutes there were birds all over the place.

There used to be a Don’t Feed The Birds sign, but some people are their own worst enemy. The litter wardens should deal with this. — Jimmy Borland, Marryat Terrace, Dundee.

Not a record
I READ your On This Day article on February 13 stating that Joe Payne scored a record 10 goals for one player in one game for Luton Town v. Bristol Rovers in 1938.

The record is in fact held by John Petrie of Arbroath, who scored 13 goals in the Gayfield side’s world record 36-0 Scottish Cup win versus Aberdeen Bon Accord on September 12, 1885. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.

[Our apologies. Mr Aimer is correct. The suppliers of our On This Day information is English-based and we have pointed out the error to them.]

Arctic convoys
CAN ANYONE help in a debate? Do Arctic Naval Convoys Association members wear white berets when on their parades? Is there an address for the association? — Murray’s Bar.

[A spokesman at the Merchant Navy Association website said, “The Russian Convoy Club has now disbanded nationally. There are some branches still running, but from the list on the Navy News website, there is no branch in Scotland. Similarly there is a North Russia Club but I cannot find any branches in Scotland.

The white berets were typically worn by members of the above two associations. The beret is worn at official functions such as Remembrance Sunday. Our Association still sells them.

The Ministry of Defence issued the Arctic Emblem last October for personnel who served in the Russian convoys during the Second World War. We have information about this badge on our site:

www.mna.org.uk.

Also on our website we have details of the Merchant Seafarers Veterans badge which we issue, free of charge, to qualifying applicants.]

Far too many adverts
WHAT GOES on with TV nowadays?

After tuning in to Desperate Housewives on Channel 4 on a Wednesday evening, it started at 10pm and then went for a commercial break at 10.09pm, and returned at 10.16pm.

I get fed up with this sort of thing on TV and listen to radio. But even on radio there are adverts. — Daryl Beech, Kirriemuir.

Flat rate
AS A former resident of the multis in Alexander Street, Dundee, I ask the council why Hilltown FM were allocated a flat in Maxwelltown Tower?

The multis are due for demolition and tenants are being moved out.

It was stated in a letter to tenants no flats would be re-allocated.

I wonder if Hilltown FM is being charged for this flat? — DJ Big Pete.

Song lyrics
I AM trying to find information about a song, which might have been by the Carpenters.

It was a girl singing about when she was little and she used to wear her mum’s clothes and the relationship she had with her mum.

I’m sure it mentioned lipstick and handbags. — Don’t Know.

Tracing family
I AM trying to trace a family relative. Luisa Proto was born in Dundee in 1900 and married Thomas Smith on September 5, 1924.

Before her marriage she lived at 58 Victoria Road and was a confectioner’s assistant.

Thomas Smith lived at 278 Perth Road.

He was a bus conductor. — Mrs R. Proto, 45 Sunningdale Court, Southgate, Crawley, Sussex, RH10 6EB (tel 01293 442709).

Lib Dem disgrace
THE LIBERAL Democrats must think voters are daft. The deceit they used over the tolls on the Tay and Forth bridges was a disgrace.

Their claim to have abolished fees for care of the elderly is untrue.

And their claim of no university fees is another porky. — E. Bignell, Buttars Road, Dundee.

Council tax burden
SNP CANDIDATE Stewart Hunter (Dundee Strathmartine ward) is being less than frank in arguing in favour of council tax replacement.

Those living alone, and presently in receipt of a 25% discount, will be several hundred pounds worse off.

This change will put the burden onto an ever-decreasing number of working adults. — Rab Johnstone, Dundee.

Happy to attend
I REPLY to Lochee West. All SSP candidates in Dundee are happy to attend hustings and public meetings and have been doing so.

I agree it’s a shame there aren’t more. — Angela Gorrie, SSP Council Candidate, West End, Dundee.

Cut out middlemen
NEARLY ALL the election candidates tell us they will improve our services such as the police, environment and education.

Would it not be simpler, instead of us paying middlemen politicians, to directly elect these service chiefs?

This way we could ensure that the voice of the people was heard, because it isn’t being listened to at the moment, particularly by those who run the police. — Democrat.

Be a nation again
NORMALLY I view an election with apathy. However, on this occasion I will cast my vote for the SNP because I strongly favour independence.

When the 1707 Act of Union was signed I suspect Wallace and Bruce birled in their graves as their country was “bought and sold for English gold”.

The Scottish Parliament has only limited powers and I want to see Holyrood as a full legislative body.

Those who say Scotland can’t be fully self-administrative have forgotten it was once a kingdom.

May 3 is a date with destiny for all Scots.

Let Caledonia rise and be a nation again. — Cheilamangus.

Civil Service jobs
I DISAGREE with C.E.M.’s suggestion that Alex Salmond would scrap plans to bring Civil Service jobs to Dundee. The SNP’s been at the forefront in campaigning to bring these jobs to the city. — Jester.
Why the delay?
IF INDEPENDENCE is such a good thing, why has Alex Salmond postponed voting on it until 2010? — Confused.
