Wipers’ nest strictly for the birds

The crows’ nest is furnished to a high standard with coathangers, string and cable ties.

The owners of a Dundee car dealership, puzzled by the continual disappearance of windscreen wipers from their stock, found the culprits in the unlikeliest of places…. (writes Mark McLaughlin).
Norman and Shona Fairweather, owners of Norman Fairweather Motors on East Kingsway, found their wiper blades were being used to build a nest by a neighbouring family of crows.

Shona said, “It’s quite funny seeing what they’ve built the nest from, but we’re obviously having to replace wiper blades all the time.

“We have to chase them away from the cars on a regular basis — they’re very destructive.”

The crows have built their nest in a tree in the dealership’s grounds.

As well as using the Fairweather’s wiper blades they have also incorporated plastic cable-ties, packing string and even a 12-inch long plastic coathanger.

Bob McCurley, chairman of Angus and Dundee Bird Club, said he has never seen a crows’ nest made from wiper blades before but said it was a tribute to the birds’ inventive nest-building habits.

He jested, “The crows are obviously keen on keeping the rain out of their nest if they’re fitting windscreen wipers.

“This is the very first time I’ve heard of crows using windscreen wipers, but they are very ingenious and have the ability to improvise with whatever becomes available.

Mr McCurley said the innovative nest would be a subject of interest to his members and pledged to pay a visit to Norman Fairweather Motors to see it for himself.
