Angel theft heartbreak

A heartless thief ruined Easter weekend for a Dundee family after stealing the centrepiece from a garden created in memory of their dead son (writes Graham Huband).
Gaynor and Garry Hayburn were pitched into emotional turmoil on Saturday after discovering a stone angel from the tribute to their son Jonathan was missing.

The 13-year-old died from head injuries in June 2002 after falling while playing at derelict Baldovan House, near Strathmartine.

The couple wanted to keep Jonathan’s memory alive and thought the perfect way to do so was by creating the garden at their home in Mauchline Place East.

A fan of Dundee Tigers, the tribute also includes an ice hockey puck, a picture and a plaque.

Gaynor said she had been left frantic when she discovered the angel was missing on Saturday morning.

She called the police and neighbours helped as she carried out her own search.

She said, “When I found out it was missing it was heartbreaking. I couldn’t believe someone would come in and steal it when they could see it was part of a memorial garden.

“It is bad enough that they were in our back garden, but to go into a special area of the garden and take the angel was terrible.

“It is a sitting stone angel of a little boy. There is also a picture with a plaque underneath it that says ‘Always Loved Never Forgotten’ and a garden planted up for him.”

Happily, the angel was later traced by a neighbour after apparently having been sold to a householder in the area.

Gaynor said the ornament would now be kept indoors unless she, Garry and son Jac (2), were in the garden.

She said, “My neighbour found it in one of the gardens over the back. It was very important to get it back as Jac does the garden with his dad and he knows the things that are in there.

“It is going to stay in the utility room from now on and we’ll take it out when we are in the garden.”

Tayside Police confirmed the incident had been reported to them, but no further action will be taken as the ornament had been recovered.
