| Disaster strikes at Caird Hall |
| FOR ONCE, Dundee’s Caird Hall managed to attract a well-respected, internationally-recognised comedian in Jimmy Carr.
Anticipation was high and the City Square was packed with eager people looking forward to having a good laugh on Friday night.
The doors opened and seats were taken ... then disaster.
Jimmy appeared on stage and that was about it. We were in the first row and could barely hear the jokes because of too much reverb on the mic.
It turns out that the people at the back of the hall weren’t having too much fun either. They couldn’t hear anything.
All praise goes to Jimmy for the way in which he handled the situation. He gave the sound technicians a good bit of stick, and was rewarded by the technicians completely cutting off the sound just as he was getting to a punch-line.
Actually, for us and everyone else in the first couple of rows, when the sound went off we could hear Jimmy perfectly. It was a shame the other 1000 or so punters couldn’t have squeezed up beside us.
Well done, Jimmy, for battling through and completing the gig (and offering refunds while on stage).
No wonder Dundee struggles to attract anything worthwhile. I don’t think we’ll be seeing too many more top-notch performers enduring the roads and miles to Dundee. — Still Not Laughing.
[A spokesman for Dundee City Council confirmed that there were problems with the sound, but added, “This was not a problem with the Caird Hall’s sound system — it was sound system hired out by Jimmy Carr’s management.
“The refunds will be processed by the box office next week.”] |
| Don’t they know it is wrong? |
| Did YOUR daughter or son come home with a pink Nokia 6111 or did they suddenly have money from selling the phone?
My daughter dropped her mobile on the number 32B bus from the town at around 7 pm. Her friend phoned the mobile and it was answered by a girl who said “your loss”.
The very expensive Sony phone she got for Christmas was stolen on her birthday in January. I hadn’t got around to insuring it.
I gave her a loan of my phone a few days ago until she could save enough to buy a new one.
Now it too is gone. Words cannot describe how disgusted I feel. When my children find things they hand them in to the authorities.
That’s because I brought mine up to know that stealing is morally (as well as lawfully) wrong. — Out-of-pocket Mother. |
| Police plea |
| I LIVE in Fintry, Dundee and, like readers from other areas of the city, we have the same situation with youths shouting and drinking in our streets.
On telephoning the police we were told they would get there when they can.
Not long ago, when muggings were going on, residents saw many officers on foot patrolling our streets.
But now we are back to seeing no officers on foot after they caught the person responsible for the muggings.
Get our police back on foot patrols in all areas and let us live in peace instead of having to put up with unsociable behaviour.
We should have a proper police service at all times and not wait till someone gets mugged or assaulted to see officers in our streets. — Angry Householder. |
| No need for extra work |
| I AM very surprised to see workmen planting up further shrub borders on the central reservations of the Kingsway, in particular between Kingsway Tech and Strathmartine Road roundabouts.
The borders created on the eastern stretches of this road under the ambassador way programme have been a real problem from the maintenance angle. Furthermore, work is now in progress at the Craigiebank and Pitkerro Road circles and really such plantings need regular attention, which costs money. I really do not see the advantage of creating further work when the grass and the daffies are quite adequate. — Regular Commuter.

| Get in touch |
| IF THE writers of the letters about youth issues at Torridon Road and Nursery Road, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, get in touch, I would be happy to tell them of the efforts to reduce this problem. — Councillor Rod Wallace (office 01382 433826, home 01382 739899, mobile 07984 795 556).

| Urgent road repairs needed |
| DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL is spending thousands on modifications to the Buttars Loan/Liff Road junction, narrowing the road, replacing a circle, and also building a “village square”.
Meanwhile the roads in Charleston, Dryburgh, Lochee and the surrounding areas are an absolute disgrace and in urgent need of repair.
There are potholes in most of the roads around a foot deep. They have been there for months. Charleston Road and Dunholm Road are worse than farm tracks.
I pay road tax and believe I’m more than entitled to expect a reasonable surface which won’t damage my car. — E.G., Dundee.

| Reunion appeal |
| I THANK Tele readers for their response to the launch of the Royal Naval Electrical Branch Association last year.
We have had ex-RN electricians coming out of the woodwork seeking former shipmates and with some wonderful stories ranging from the involvement in the Korean War, Suez and the Gulf, to name some of the conflicts, to the time that HMS Bermuda went to Bermuda and they all enjoyed a few days fun as only “Jack” knows.
An unexpected line came from the readers who had relatives abroad who were ex-Royal Navy electricians. Consequently we have members in the USA, Australia and Spain. The highlight of any association is the annual reunion and our first has now been booked for Bournemouth.
So if there are any ex-RN electricians amongst Tele readers, drop me a line and tell me when you served and your service number (if you can remember it). — Mike Crowe, Royal Naval Electrical Branch Association, 7 Heath Road, Lake, Sandown, Isle of Wight, PO36 8PG (email mike.crowe1@btinternet.com) |
| Housing plans disgust |
| I AM disgusted that Hillcrest Housing has been granted planning permission in Dundee for three townhouses at the foot of Caldrum Street/North George Street and block of six flats at the car park in North George Street.
This area is already heavily congested with HGV and factory worker cars throughout the day. Sometimes I am unable to get out of my street to go to work.
Dundee City Council has obviously not taken into account any of these issues. Looking through these plans there are so many issues residents can’t object to, some of which include devaluation of property, fire hazards, loss of view.
I bought my flat years ago because of the lovely view/open space/and lack of modern buildings.
The land concerned currently has lovely trees and shrubbery, which will all have to be taken away.
Last year I couldn’t open my windows in summer due to building noise. This year it appears we have the same scenario. — ANON.

| Salmond’s soapbox |
| IF A week is a long time in politics, then the 90s must be an eternity.
Back then, Alex Salmond actively campaigned for a refit of Trident to take place at a Scottish yard and complained bitterly when it didn’t happen.
A decade or so later and he’s on his soapbox again, this time arguing that Trident has no place in Scotland.
It is little wonder many are turned off by today’s politicians. — Political Watcher. |
