Abused for being a mother
I write in disgust at the behaviour of an elderly woman on the 9X bus from Broughty Ferry to Dundee City Centre on March 16.

My friend and I got on the bus with our six and four-month old sons in their prams.

My friend politely asked the woman if she could move her foot so she could get the pram into its proper position.

This woman then started a rant about how her taxes pay for these bus services and we should get jobs.

She accused us of being loose, unemployed, single parents who scrounge off the State.

She then became even more verbally abusive by making vulgar comments.

The fact is we are both married/in a relationship, have full-time jobs and pay our own taxes. I also point out I do not think there is anything wrong with being a single parent, this was her view not mine.

This woman should be ashamed of herself.

I thank the lady at the back of the bus who tried to stop the abuse but also became victim of this woman’s tongue. — Professional Mum.

Don’t pick the daffs

ON MORE than one occasion recently, I have seen groups of people emerging from Baxter Park, Dundee, clutching big bunches of freshly-picked daffodils.
ON MORE than one occasion recently, I have seen groups of people emerging from Baxter Park, Dundee, clutching big bunches of freshly-picked daffodils.

More often than not they have young children with them. What kind of a role model is this providing?

Are they going to “blame the kids” the next time something is stolen/vandalised from local amenities?

Also, when walking through Baxter Park, I note that many of the flower beds are trampled.

Would the people who think it’s okay to pick flowers from parks think it’s okay to pick flowers from private gardens? It’s the same thing. — Flower Girl.

[Our photographer took this picture of trampled and damaged daffs in Baxter Park.]

Comic Relief rethink
Comic RELIEF once again had us digging deep into our pockets to help at home and abroad.

Although I find it disturbing people are suffering, is it not time we concentrated on doing more things proactively than reactively in those countries? Isn’t it about time someone spread the word of contraception in poor countries?

This may seem harsh but it is simply common sense.

If your family is poor and you have little food while your country frequently suffers from killer diseases, then why would you want to bring children into this environment and then rely on others to provide?

Closer to home, some parents, who clearly can’t afford children and have no intentions of working, have a child or more and then rely on benefits. — Family Provider.

Daughter distraught after losing purse
MY DAUGHTER went shopping to buy me a Mother’s Day present in Dundee’s Overgate Centre on Saturday.

About 5 pm I received a phone call asking me to pick her up. She was extremely upset and crying. The reason — after buying me a card she lost her pink purse.

I want the person who found it and didn’t hand it in to know my daughter was still very upset on Mother’s Day.

When she handed me my card, she couldn’t stop apologising through her tears for not having a present.

She is only 10 and her name, address and phone number was in the purse in her own hand writing, so whoever found it would have known it belonged to a child.

I hope you slept well on Saturday night because my daughter didn’t. — Devastated.

Bus makes us late for work
WE ARE angry and irate workers for Site in Dundee’s technology park.
WE ARE angry and irate workers for Site in Dundee’s technology park.

The Travel Dundee 14 bus is constantly 20 minutes late, making us late for work.

Several of us have emailed and telephoned Travel Dundee to no avail.

We are angry this has been on-going since November, with no explanation.

A dozen or more workers are hit. — Sitel Employees.

[Stuart Henry, corporate affairs manager, said, “Firstly we would like to thank the readers who took the time to raise issues surrounding our 14 bus service.

“Comments from our customers are vital if we are to continue to operate an efficient network across the city.

“With regards to the general level of service, Travel Dundee, like all other road users, experienced huge problems during the days of the recent heavy snowfall which we saw in the city. This adverse weather impacted on the timetables of all our services throughout that two-day period.

“With regards to the 14 service, in particular, we would like to urge those passengers who have raised direct concerns surrounding the service, to contact us directly by phoning us on (01382) 201121 or, if easier, email us at mailbox@traveldundee.co.uk with the specific times and dates that it’s claimed the services were operating late.

“If there is a larger issue, then we would be very happy to meet with the complainants to ensure a positive outcome.

“We are constantly monitoring our bus services and are committed to providing a first-class service.”]

Eye for an eye
I read that Lord Falconer, the Lord Chancellor, believes people like the Soham killer Ian Huntley and child killer Robert Black should die in prison as society requires retribution in those sort of cases.

This is the sort of sentences that should be handed down by our courts.

These kind of people should die in prison. An eye for an eye. — Jimmy Borland, Marryat Terrace, Dundee.

Bring back hanging
IT IS about time the Government did something about crime. Politicians are very hard on smokers and they have to toe the line.

But those who take drugs or have a drink problem are still getting off.

I am often shocked at the sentences given out for assault.

Criminals sent to jail come out and do the same things again. Jail cannot be that bad or they wouldn’t want to go back.

Bring back hanging and the birch. There would be a big drop in crime. — O.A.P.

Seeking dog
Having READ the article in Tuesday’s Tele re the demolition of Dundee’s Brown Street Kennels, I phoned up to inquire about re-homing. I was surprised the kennels charge £72 to potential new owners.

I am an ex-serviceman in my mid-50s and have experience and certificates in dog handling.

I would like to get a dog between three months to a year, preferably a German Shepherd/Alsatian (dog or bitch), which I could train myself.

A good home awaits and I have no problems with being vetted. — John Hughes (01382 526332).

Faslane losses
Scottus UNDERESTIMATES the number of job losses from the closure of Faslane.

Over 7000, roughly half civilians, are employed at Faslane and Coulport. Several thousand others enjoy the £270 million benefit to the local economy.

Faslane is more of a small town than a base. It has shops, a power station, a sewage plant, engineering works, multi-storey car park, office and hotel accommodation for 2500. — Politico.

Drastic tax plan
THE SNP proposal to abolish council tax and replace it with a local income tax reeks of Thatcher’s poll tax.
THE SNP proposal to abolish council tax and replace it with a local income tax reeks of Thatcher’s poll tax.

If this new system is introduced, Westminster will withhold almost £400 million in benefits.

This money assists the vulnerable in our society.

Also thousands of unskilled workers are paid the minimum wage and this new poll tax will have a drastic effect on them. — Phil Welsh, Dundee.
