BROKE RECORD IN MORNING . . . A QUICK FORFAR BRIDIE . . . THEN STARRED IN SCOTTISH CUP FINAL
SCOTT FARQUHARSON was interested to see mention of the Ashdale reunion, organised by Jim Melville, in the December 15 edition.
Scott, who is legendary in the junior football world as “Mr Scone Thistle”, played in goal for Ashdale in their Scottish Cup-winning team.
“I remember the whole day as one great experience,” he recalled.
“It all started in the morning for me when I travelled through to Forfar with the Morgan Academy Second XI. cricket team.
“I hit 72 not out in 45 minutes, which was then a record for the school.
“I also hit a ball for six and it went clean into Forfar Loch.
“It was all a bit of a rush after that as I just grabbed a bridie and set off back to Dundee to play in a Scottish Cup Final.”
Scott, now 74, has been with Scone Thistle for 34 years.
“In my younger days, there was a great guy called Harry Simpson and he couldn’t do enough for you,” Scott continued.
“He was my inspiration when I decided to put something back into the game.”
Although he now stays in Scone, Scott was brought up in Dundee and stayed in Woodside Terrace.
He spent 13 years at Morgan, first coming through their primary school.
EDDIE AND DAVIE TEAMED UP AGAIN AT TANNADICE . . . NOT WITH UNITED, BUT AT A “TATTIE” FIELD JUST OUTSIDE FORFAR
EDDIE RAMSAY, who has contributed to BwB in the past, sent in an email from his home in Queensland, Australia.
“I loved the ‘Blether’ sent out by Wilma and Bill Scobie via Jim Rooney in Melbourne and then to me on the Gold Coast,” wrote Eddie.
“It was Davie Watson’s Rock Cup query.
“In 1958, I played for the ‘Wee Rockie’ (Rockwell Primary School) against Davie for Butterburn in the final of the Sports Cup at East End Park.
“The final at that time was always played on primary school sports day.
“The final finished 1-1 and we went on to win the replay at Balfield 2-1.
“I remember George MacNiven and John ‘Tucker’ Thoms playing for the ’Burn, while in my team were guys such a Scotty Holland and Davie Francis.
“The following season, we lost to St Pius in the final thanks to a left-winger called John Wilkie.
“Davie and I then teamed up at the ‘Big Rockie’ and then at Butterburn Youth Club all the way through to U/18. We were also at Tannadice together.
“No, not signed for Dundee United, as this particular ‘Tannadice’ was a farm just outside Forfar.
“That was when we were at Rockwell together and we teamed up to go to the “tatties”, which was potato-picking.
“Should any reader want to get in touch with me, they can send an emial to krnobbs@hotmail.com
“As for you, John, keep on ‘blethering’.”
IT’S ME - THE GOALIE!
Former goalkeeper CHARLIE ROSS emailed to say he was tickled pink by a previous BwB article.
“It’s always good to hear mention of my former team-mate Dave Bruce,” he said.
“I remember some time back standing in a car park in Cupar, Fife, watching a mechanic fix my car. As he worked on his diagnostics, he handed me his ‘Tully’ to read, all crumpled up and a bit oily.
“As I opened up the paper, there again was a photo of Dave. Not only that, it was a photo of Lochee United from the 1960s. And, even better still, there I was in the goalie’s jersey.
“That team had some great players like Jimmy Rooney and Jimmy Smart.”
EDDIE SCORED 80 FROM THE WING
GEORGE CARR, of Fintry, Dundee, responded to last week’s request for details of Eddie Innes’ scoring exploits.
“I remember Eddie scoring 80 goals from the left-wing in the year Renton lost in the Scottish Juvenile Cup Final.”
SADLY PASSED AWAY
Sadly, two previous contibutors to this column have recently passed away.
JOHN GIBB (pictured below) drove the car which welcomed Dick McTaggart back to the city after winning his Olympic gold boxing medal (BwB, Nov. 14, 2003).
GEORGE ANNAN (“Dapper Dan”) featured as recently as February 23 this year with an 80-year association of watching various St Joseph’s teams.
