| Although the 59-year-old pled not guilty to a charge of aggravated breach of the peace when he appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court, the club has decided he will not be allowed to return to Dens Park in the interim.
Trinidad and Tobago international Scotland was subjected to racist chanting while playing for the Perth club in the Scottish Cup quarter-final last week against Motherwell.
However, it has now emerged that the former Dundee United player may also have been subject to racial abuse earlier in the month while playing for St Johnstone at Dens Park on February 10.
Dundee FC operations manager Jim Thomson said the club would reconsider the suspension if the man was found not guilty.
The club’s board of directors later issued a joint statement on Dundee FC’s website.
It said, “Following a complaint made to the club and Tayside Police by Dundee fans regarding alleged racial abuse of St Johnstone player Jason Scotland during February’s game at Dens Park, a full investigation carried out by the police and the club has resulted in a 59-year-old Dundee man being arrested and charged with an aggravated breach of the peace.
“The man, identified as a Dundee FC season-ticket holder, appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court and pled not guilty to the charge. He has been ordered to appear at a later date and a condition of bail is that he does not attempt to enter any football ground in the UK.
“Dundee Football Club operate an Anti-Discriminatory Policy which states that it will not tolerate racist, sectarian, sexual or bigoted harassment or other discriminatory behaviour whether physical or verbal, and will work to ensure that such behaviour is met with appropriate action in whatever context it occurs.
“The club were unable to make any comment or take any action until a full internal enquiry had been conducted. This process was concluded, and we will now write to the individual concerned banning him from Dens Park.
“St Johnstone have been kept informed of developments and we have sent an apology to the club and to Jason from Dundee FC and its many decent supporters.
“We can advise that our message of routing out any individual or group, which are witnessed in any alleged anti-discriminatory behaviour, is being endorsed by our supporters and, as a club, we would like to thank the two young Dundee fans who brought this behaviour to the attention of the club and the police.” |
