Back to basics for Dee
Dundee manager Alex Rae is looking for his side to get back to basics when they travel to face Hamilton on Saturday (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Dark Blues were brought back to earth with an almighty bump last week when Clyde thumped them at Dens.

However, prior to that 4-1 defeat, Dundee had been playing some of their best stuff of the season and were on an impressive run.

And, Alex wants his side to learn from the mistakes they made against the Bully Wee and get right back on track against Billy Reid’s men.

That won’t be easy against an Accies outfit that has made life difficult for the Dens men recently, especially on the synthetic pitch at New Douglas Park.

But, after viewing a DVD of the horror show against Clyde yesterday, Alex is confident his men have what it takes to bounce straight back.

“The guys watched the DVD of the Clyde game and I’ve got to say they were very receptive to everything we were trying to point out to them,” said the Dens gaffer.

“We hadn’t been conceding many goals before Saturday — I think it was two in the previous five league games.

“So we just need to brush up on where were went wrong and show a bit more concentration.

“Hamilton will be tough, but, although it’s a plastic surface, I’d like to think that would suit our passing game down to the ground.”

Long-term injury victim Bryan Deasley apart, Gary Smith remains the only doubt for the trip west.

The central defender has been suffering from a bout of flu. However, Alex is hoping Smith will be able to train tomorrow and, if he does, there is every chance he’ll be in his usual place at the weekend.

Craig out and about
While his side will be idle this week, Dundee United boss Craig Levein will be a busy man as he looks to bolster his squad for next season (writes Graeme Finnan).
With no SPL games scheduled due to the Tennent’s Scottish Cup quarter-finals, Craig will grab the opportunity to take in a few games and may even head south of the border in his search for new talent.

“There are a couple of options open to us and we haven’t quite decided where we’ll be yet, but we’ll certainly be out and about,” said Craig today.

United sent a strong squad to face Motherwell in this afternoon’s reserve game at Station Park, Forfar.

Lee Mair, Garry Kenneth, Stuart Duff, Jon Daly and Morgaro Gomis were all pencilled in to take part.

Meanwhile, youth international Greg Cameron remains sidelined after picking up a hamstring strain in last week’s reserve game against Inverness Caley.

“Greg is still a couple of weeks away from a return,” added Craig.

Baby-faced Saint
Aged just 15 years and nine months, Darren Wilcox may well have set a record for being the youngest St Johnstone player to appear in a first-team game (writes James Masson).
The Perth youngster replaced Steven Kerr near the end of last night’s 3-1 Forfarshire Cup win against Brechin City at McDiarmid Park.

Saints have fielded several players aged just 16 in other games, with Chris Conway being their youngest player to appear in a top-team SPL match, away to Kilmarnock.

But it’s thought Darren, whose older brother Colin plays for Kinnoull juniors, is the youngest player to turn out for Saints’ first team.
